{"id":38500,"date":"2012-03-30T08:30:24","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T14:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=38500"},"modified":"2012-03-30T08:30:28","modified_gmt":"2012-03-30T14:30:28","slug":"pearce-introduces-organ-mountains-protection-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2012\/03\/pearce-introduces-organ-mountains-protection-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce introduces Organ Mountains protection bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_37369\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-37369 \" title=\"organ-mountains-4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/organ-mountains-4.jpeg\" alt=\"The Organ Mountains (Photo by Heath Haussamen)\" width=\"270\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Organ Mountains (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., has introduced a bill that would protect the Organ Mountains in Do\u00f1a Ana County by establishing 58,500 acres as a national monument.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/main\/2012\/03\/30\/politics\/bill-to-protect-organ-range.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Albuquerque Journal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPearce told the Journal his bill represents a compromise between those who prefer more restrictive federal wilderness designation for the mountains and those who prefer fewer restrictions on development and use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018We\u2019ve always supported the idea that the Organs should not be built on \u2014 it\u2019s one of the signatures of our district,\u2019 Pearce said. \u2018We\u2019ve just had a disagreement on how to get there.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., and others have pushed for the protection of hundreds of thousands of acres in Do\u00f1a Ana County by designating them as wilderness but they haven\u2019t been able to get such a bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/time-runs-out-on-wilderness-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">passed by Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and others are taking a different approach \u2013 seeking creation of a national monument, like Pearce, but proposing it encompass land in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.organmountains.org\/the-monument\/map-of-proposal-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\">several areas throughout the county<\/a>, including the Organs. Bingaman has sponsored <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/query\/z?c112:s.1024:\" target=\"_blank\">a bill<\/a> proposing just that.<\/p>\n<p>Bingaman was quoted by the Journal as saying he welcomed Pearce\u2019s bill as a starting point for negotiations between the House and Senate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
