{"id":3838,"date":"2008-10-12T23:56:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-13T05:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/iglesias-opines-on-report-appointment-of-prosecutor\/"},"modified":"2008-10-12T23:56:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-13T05:56:00","slug":"iglesias-opines-on-report-appointment-of-prosecutor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/iglesias-opines-on-report-appointment-of-prosecutor\/","title":{"rendered":"Iglesias opines on report, appointment of prosecutor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SPLjGVR-omI\/AAAAAAAAJA8\/fVAB9gR69-Y\/s1600-h\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SPLjGVR-omI\/AAAAAAAAJA8\/fVAB9gR69-Y\/s200\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256513413026062946\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> is out with two new commentaries on the <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/us-attorney-scandal-heats-up-again.html\">recently released report<\/a> on the firings of nine <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> attorneys, including him, which found that the reasons Bush administration staffers gave Congress last year for firing Iglesias were hogwash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the first, an Oct. 1 commentary published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/commentary\/la-oe-iglesias1-2008oct01,0,5484534.story\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>, Iglesias wrote that he was pleased that the report \u201cfully vindicated\u201d what he and his fired colleagues have been saying: \u201cImproper politicization has crippled the (Justice) department, and the Bush administration\u2019s culture of partisanship-loyalty above all has done a terrible disservice to this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJustice was compromised. Not only were my colleagues and I not insulated from politics &#8212; as we should have been in our jobs as prosecutors &#8212; but we were fired for the most partisan of reasons,\u201d Iglesias wrote. \u201cIn my case, it was because powerful Republicans in Congress and the White House believed that I had not done my duty as a Republican to bring criminal charges against Democrats in the run-up to the 2006 elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias wrote that the \u201clack of adult supervision at Justice was breathtaking; no one reined in the young bulls in the constitutional china shop.\u201d He also wrote the report indicates that the reasons for the firings were based on \u201crumor and innuendo rather than evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a Friday column published on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/david-c-iglesias\/new-dangerous-turn-in-jus_b_133614.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Huffington Post<\/a>, Iglesias wrote about the appointment of a federal prosecutor to decide whether criminal charges are warranted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNo longer just a civil matter to blithely ignore, this ominous development could result in current and high level officials being indicted for crimes,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI suspect the special counsel will \u2018follow the emails\u2019 in the way that \u2018follow the money\u2019 brought down Nixon\u2019s men during Watergate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias named several New Mexico Republicans who he said \u201ctried to improperly influence me to file cases that were non-provable or not ready to indict,\u201d and said such \u201creprehensible practice may be acceptable in corrupt third world countries but it has no place in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias pledged to cooperate fully with the special prosecutor. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias of New Mexico is out with two new commentaries on the recently released report on the firings of nine U.S. attorneys, including him, which found that the reasons Bush administration staffers gave Congress last year for firing Iglesias were hogwash.
