{"id":3824,"date":"2008-10-08T23:14:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-09T05:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/fbi-probing-1400-voter-registration-forms\/"},"modified":"2008-10-08T23:14:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-09T05:14:00","slug":"fbi-probing-1400-voter-registration-forms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/fbi-probing-1400-voter-registration-forms\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI probing 1,400 voter registration forms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened a preliminary probe into 1,400 \u201cpotentially fraudulent\u201d voter registration forms in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article_email\/SB122351568128417691-lMyQjAxMDI4MjAzOTUwMTk1Wj.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver told the newspaper she had turned over the suspicious forms to law enforcement, and said that\u2019s proof that her office\u2019s review of forms that are submitted to her office works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat\u2019s 1,400 cards here sitting in a file; they\u2019re not entered into the system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The revelation about the probe was part of a larger article about Republicans \u201creviving alarms\u201d about voter fraud in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other states. The article quoted state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=315\" target=\"_blank\">Justine Fox-Young<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, as expressing concern. Even if illegal voting is rare, she said, \u201cevery fraudulent vote cast cancels out a legitimate one. This is <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, where every election is close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The article points out that the controversial organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acorn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACORN<\/a> has worked with other groups to register nearly 80,000 new voters in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, particularly in the state\u2019s \u201cDemocratic-leaning urban areas.\u201d ACORN and other groups have been very active in Bernalillo and <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Counties<\/st1:placename>, and ACORN has received <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/acorn-is-doing-good-work-in-new-mexico.html\">its share of negative headlines<\/a> in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the Journal, a sign at ACORN\u2019s <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> office states, \u201cAnyone committing fraud will be reported to the Bureau of Elections, prosecuted and terminated immediately.\u201d The group says it has fired about 80 worked in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> since December because of concerns about potentially fraudulent registrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Check out the article when you get a chance by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article_email\/SB122351568128417691-lMyQjAxMDI4MjAzOTUwMTk1Wj.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened a preliminary probe into 1,400 \u201cpotentially fraudulent\u201d voter registration forms in Bernalillo County, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
