{"id":380,"date":"2006-07-18T11:41:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-18T17:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/lyons-responds-to-baca-attack-says-hes-raising-more-money-because-hes-business-friendly\/"},"modified":"2006-07-18T11:41:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-18T17:41:00","slug":"lyons-responds-to-baca-attack-says-hes-raising-more-money-because-hes-business-friendly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/lyons-responds-to-baca-attack-says-hes-raising-more-money-because-hes-business-friendly\/","title":{"rendered":"Lyons responds to Baca attack, says he&#8217;s raising more money because he&#8217;s business-friendly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Lyons%2C%20Pat.2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Lyons%2C%20Pat.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>State Land Commissioner Pat Lyons responded to an attack from his challenger by saying he is receiving more donations from developers and oil and gas companies because he is business-friendly.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrat Jim Baca released an analysis of campaign contributions to the incumbent Republican Monday, which showed that Lyons had taken more than $117,000 from developers and real estate companies and more than $186,000 from oil and gas companies through May of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Baca%2C%20Jim.14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Baca%2C%20Jim.9.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt appears to me that a \u2018selling of the land office\u2019 is occurring to those who have leases with it,\u201d Baca said. \u201cThe amount of money for a candidate from those who do business with the office that he governs is truly unprecedented. This shows that he will truly have a difficult time remaining independent. This really makes it clear that the land commissioner races should be publicly financed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wasn\u2019t surprised by the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 14.4pt;\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 14.4pt;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe energy and agriculture industries and developers are the land office\u2019s primary sources of revenue and together have generated more than $1 billion for public education during my first term as land commissioner,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said in an e-mail. \u201cTheir overwhelming support simply indicates they approve of my record and appreciate my business-friendly approach.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 14.4pt;\"><span style=\";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;color:black;\"   ><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 14.4pt;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cMy opponent has admitted that he is antagonistic and it appears he alienated the people who did business with him at the land office. If those industries aren\u2019t contributing to his campaign he has only himself to blame,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cI also have the support of a number of conservationists, and have been recognized by the Association of Conservation Districts for my efforts to protect natural resources and singled out by the New Mexico Wildlife Federation for my continuous support. I should note that I\u2019ve invested $5 million in land, water and wildlife conservation programs, while my opponent spent nothing on land maintenance programs.\u201d<\/span><span style=\";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;color:black;\"   ><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I should note the extreme disparity in fundraising thus far in this campaign. At the end of June, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> reported having just under $500,000 in the bank, dwarfing Baca\u2019s $6,977.
