In a surprise move, Senate leaders announced late Tuesday that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20081001\/ap_on_bi_ge\/financial_meltdown\" target=\"_blank\">they\u2019ll vote today on a bailout plan<\/a> that also includes a number of tax breaks the House rejected last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before that move was announced Tuesday, leaders in both parties were trying to make minor changes to the bailout proposal in an attempt to win about a dozen additional votes in the House to ensure passage. Many said a new House vote could come later this week, but the status of that vote is unclear now that the Senate has scheduled its vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOLl4Swt4dI\/AAAAAAAAI4E\/67qFxkG4BbE\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOLl4Swt4dI\/AAAAAAAAI4E\/67qFxkG4BbE\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252012870739026386\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Regardless, Udall spokesman Sam Simon said early Tuesday afternoon that, since Monday\u2019s narrow defeat of the proposal, his office had received \u201c600 e-mails and dozens (approaching hundreds) of phone calls,\u201d most of them \u201copposing the bailout package as it stood\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips said that, before Monday\u2019s vote, the calls and e-mails were \u201coverwhelmingly against\u201d the bailout &#8212; \u201con the order of 150 or 200 to 1.\u201d Since the vote, he said, \u201cwe\u2019re getting a lot more calls supporting the bailout, but it\u2019s still 4-1 against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, and Udall, his Democratic opponent, both voted against the bill. U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., voted for it. Her office did not respond Tuesday to a request for information on calls and e-mails about the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOLmCFGZrxI\/AAAAAAAAI4c\/4YJXyrAV404\/s1600-h\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOLmCFGZrxI\/AAAAAAAAI4c\/4YJXyrAV404\/s200\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252013038870572818\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Neither did the office of U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., who has said he would have supported the version of the bill the House rejected Monday. A spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., said Tuesday afternoon &#8212; before the Senate scheduled today\u2019s vote &#8212; that the number of calls about the bailout bill dropped significantly after Monday\u2019s vote. Bingaman has also said he would have voted for the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">During the week prior to the vote, Bingaman spokeswoman Jude McCartin said Tuesday, the senator\u2019s office was receiving about 300 calls a day, \u201cmostly unhappy about the proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut many of those callers also said if it was necessary to pass something, they wanted taxpayer protections and no golden parachutes built in,\u201d McCartin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Guv, Teague would have voted against bailout bill<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, two high-ranking <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> politicians added their voices on Tuesday to the bipartisan chorus of people opposing the bailout bill the House rejected on Monday. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> and 2nd Congressional District Democratic candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> said Tuesday at a news conference in Las Cruces that they would have voted with Udall and Pearce to reject the bailout bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWith the info I\u2019ve seen, I couldn\u2019t have voted for that,\u201d Teague said, explaining that there weren\u2019t enough guarantees for taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI agree with Harry. I wouldn\u2019t have voted for that bill,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said, adding that a proposal needs to include assurances that a crisis like the current situation won\u2019t happen again, stronger provisions to ensure bailout money isn\u2019t used for huge CEO payouts, protection for homeowners and more transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The offices of U.S. Reps.
