{"id":3783,"date":"2008-09-30T13:59:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T19:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/bingaman-would-have-voted-for-bailout-bill\/"},"modified":"2008-09-30T13:59:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-30T19:59:00","slug":"bingaman-would-have-voted-for-bailout-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/bingaman-would-have-voted-for-bailout-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Bingaman would have voted for bailout bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOKFKBEAqBI\/AAAAAAAAI30\/msKdXIZjVdA\/s1600-h\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SOKFKBEAqBI\/AAAAAAAAI30\/msKdXIZjVdA\/s200\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251906522597861394\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> said today that he would have voted for the proposed $700 billion bailout proposal the House rejected on Monday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe there is a need to recapitalize our banking system in order to head off failure by more financial institutions, and that was what this package was intended to do,\u201d Bingaman, D-N.M., said today in <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/mediaasset\/bingaman\/2008_09\/Audio\/mp3\/bingaman093008m.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with radio reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bingaman said the bill included an important provision requiring \u201cthat taxpayers be allowed to share in the profit or the improved economic condition of these companies down the road\u201d since taxpayers would be investing the money up front to help the companies out of financial hardship. He called that and other provisions in the bill presented to the House on Monday \u201csubstantial improvements\u201d over the original proposal, and said \u201cit would have been a prudent thing for us to go ahead with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bingaman said it\u2019s important that Congress keep working toward a bill that can pass. The Senate doesn\u2019t plan to vote on a bill until after the House approves it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The senator said he believes the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> is already in a recession, \u201cand the real issue is how deep is that recession and how long will it continue.\u201d He said a bill like the proposal the House killed on Monday \u201cwould help us to make it a shorter and a less-severe recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut I expect that the economic growth of the country will continue to slow even if we pass this package in some form in the next week or so,\u201d Bingaman said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
