{"id":3762,"date":"2008-09-25T16:08:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T22:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/whos-getting-cash-from-companies-in-crisis\/"},"modified":"2008-09-25T16:08:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-25T22:08:00","slug":"whos-getting-cash-from-companies-in-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/whos-getting-cash-from-companies-in-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Who&#8217;s getting cash from companies in crisis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With all the news about financial meltdown and government bailouts of companies, I thought it might be interesting to know how much money members of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s congressional delegation had taken from some of the companies at the center of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So I went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSecrets.org<\/a> to see what I could find. The bottom line: It appears that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s members of Congress haven\u2019t taken nearly as much over the years from these companies as some other Democrats and Republicans. Here\u2019s a breakdown:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The money-in-politics Web site lists contributions since 1989 from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2008\/09\/update-fannie-mae-and-freddie.html\" target=\"_blank\">employees and political action committees tied to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac<\/a> to each member of Congress. According to the site, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> has received $16,226, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> has received $5,000, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> has received $3,000, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> has received $1,250 and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> has received nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the Web site, PACs tied to and employees of Lehman Brothers have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2008\/09\/brothers-grim-is-lehman-next.html\" target=\"_blank\">given to each member of the delegation<\/a> during the current election cycle. Since 2007, Domenici has received $4,000, Bingaman has received $3,500, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has received $3,312, Pearce has received $2,800 and Udall has received $400. In addition, going back to 1997, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/pacs\/pacgot.php?cycle=2008&amp;cmte=C00127670\" target=\"_blank\">Lehman Brothers\u2019 PAC<\/a> has given an additional $1,000 to Bingaman and $500 to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">AIG, according to the Web site, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/toprecips.php?id=D000000123\" target=\"_blank\">hasn\u2019t given as much<\/a> to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s congressional delegation. Since 1989, PACs tied to and employees of the company have given $4,000 to Domenici and $2,000 to Bingaman, but nothing to Pearce, Udall and Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then there\u2019s Bear Sterns.
