Click <a href=\"http:\/\/wordcab.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/chairman-fernando-c-de-baca-defends.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to listen to his latest interview with 770 KKOB-AM radio in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/250937state09-25-08.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting that state party Chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=392:allen-e-weh-biography&amp;catid=47:state-party-officers-and-staff&amp;Itemid=58\" target=\"_blank\">Allen Weh<\/a> says he has been advised that he has \u201cthe authority to remove a chairman under special circumstances.\u201d Weh hasn\u2019t said whether he\u2019ll try to remove C. de Baca.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNuxCT5TKXI\/AAAAAAAAIz0\/1zDVlcM13a8\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNuxCT5TKXI\/AAAAAAAAIz0\/1zDVlcM13a8\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249984443888904562\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>All three of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> representatives have joined the chorus of Republicans and Democrats calling for C. de Baca to step down. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, also the GOP Senate candidate, told the Journal and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/SantaFeNorthernNM\/Pearce-joins-chorus-in-call-for-GOP-leader-s-resignation\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a> that C. de Baca is a \u201cgood friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe\u2019s done a lot of good for the Republican Party in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. But the comments were very unfortunate,\u201d Pearce was quoted by The New Mexican as saying. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s affecting the party. I called him and told him there\u2019s no way he should continue as county chairman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce\u2019s Democratic opponent, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, said in a statement released by his office that C. de Baca\u2019s comments, which come during Hispanic Heritage Month, are \u201cinsulting and disgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNuxCjTPHBI\/AAAAAAAAIz8\/PSRYV44YXTk\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNuxCjTPHBI\/AAAAAAAAIz8\/PSRYV44YXTk\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249984448024222738\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe boast <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s long-standing minority-majority status because of our immense pride in our vibrant diversity,\u201d Udall said. \u201cChairman C. de Baca\u2019s comments are not only demeaning to the people and pride of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>; they perpetuate and validate racism. These words are unacceptable for any official who represents our great state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Journal also reported that GOP Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> says C. de Baca should resign. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democratic 2nd Congressional District candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> released his own statement calling for C. de Baca\u2019s ouster. He also called on his GOP opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a>, \u201cto denounce his supporter\u2019s comments and ask him to resign,\u201d something Tinsley has not done, at least publicly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">The comments<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The furor is over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/blogs\/talkingamerica\/2008\/09\/the_sound_of_ranchera_and.html\" target=\"_blank\">a Friday blog posting<\/a> on BBC News\u2019 Web site in which C. de Baca was quoted by Jon Kelly as saying, \u201cThe truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves. Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won\u2019t vote for a black president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">C. de Baca claims the quote was published out of context, and he was speaking in a historical context about his grandfather\u2019s generation. He claims he believes many young Hispanics will vote for Obama. But BBC News and Kelly stand by the blog posting\u2019s portrayal of the comment as referring in general to Hispanics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, there is a recording of <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/c-de-baca-also-said-older-hispanics.html\">a separate interview<\/a> C. de Baca conducted with a different BBC reporter in which C. de Baca said this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI feel strongly that Hispanics will not support, in my generation and the generation around my age, are not going to support the Democratic candidate for president primarily because there is a strong feeling that African Americans during the civil rights movement took advantage, full advantage, of all the benefits and programs that the government offered, that were supposed to be offered to all minorities. But we were left behind, we were left sucking air, and we resented that ever since the 60s, and I don\u2019t see how a black president is going to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The county party\u2019s executive committee has backed C. de Baca, but the county party\u2019s central committee has not acted.
