{"id":3742,"date":"2008-09-22T13:11:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-22T19:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/bbc-news-blogger-stands-by-his-story-updated\/"},"modified":"2008-09-22T13:11:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-22T19:11:00","slug":"bbc-news-blogger-stands-by-his-story-updated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/bbc-news-blogger-stands-by-his-story-updated\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC News blogger stands by his story (updated)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A BBC News blogger says he quoted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcgop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bernalillo County Republican Party<\/a> Chairman Fernando C. de Baca accurately and in the proper context in a recent posting that has stirred controversy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jon Kelly wrote in an e-mail that he is \u201c100 percent confident\u201d in his quoting of C. de Baca, who he cited in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/blogs\/talkingamerica\/2008\/09\/the_sound_of_ranchera_and.html\" target=\"_blank\">a Friday blog posting<\/a> as saying that, \u201cThe truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves. Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won\u2019t vote for a black president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That set off <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/gop-leaders-racially-tinged-comments.html\">a firestorm of criticism<\/a> of C. de Baca from the campaigns of GOP presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> and 1st Congressional District candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darrenwhiteforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">C. de Baca later told <a href=\"http:\/\/wordcab.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/hispanic-county-chairman-apologizes-for.html\" target=\"_blank\">770 KKOB-AM reporter Peter St. Cyr<\/a> that his statement was taken \u201ctotally out of context\u201d by Kelly. The 70-year-old said he was speaking about his grandfather\u2019s generation, who would often say things such as, \u201cRemember your ancestors came here as conquerors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe point I was trying to make was that there is a generational difference between those folks who were born before the civil rights and those born in more recent periods,\u201d C. de Baca told St. Cyr, adding that, \u201cin my humble opinion, the older set of Hispanics would probably not vote for a black for president, but that the younger ones would flock to vote for (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obama<\/a>), conceivably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">C. de Baca also told St. Cyr that his comments came in response to a question from Kelly, who he said asked him \u201cto help him understand the history of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, vis-\u00e0-vis Hispanics, and how they interacted with the Native Americans and Blacks, you know, African Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kelly said in the e-mail that C. de Baca is wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe raised the subject, not me,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">BBC Global News international communications manager Patricia Lodge just released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJon Kelly accurately reported what Fernando C. de Baca said to him about Hispanic perceptions towards African Americans.
