{"id":3736,"date":"2008-09-19T13:34:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-19T19:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/pearce-gets-hammered-in-new-tv-ads\/"},"modified":"2008-09-19T13:34:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-19T19:34:00","slug":"pearce-gets-hammered-in-new-tv-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/pearce-gets-hammered-in-new-tv-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce gets hammered in new TV ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republican U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> is getting hammered by two new TV ads that were unveiled today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first, from Pearce\u2019s Democratic opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, uses a parrot named \u201cPolly Big Oil\u201d to make fun of Pearce and accuse him of being a mouthpiece for the oil industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s the 30-second ad:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ba7vnkYQFmY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ba7vnkYQFmY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It begins with the parrot saying, \u201cTax breaks for big oil. Tax breaks for big oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cEvery wonder why Steve Pearce repeats everything the big oil companies say?\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator asks as a television displays <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/new-pearce-ad-calls-udall.html\">Pearce\u2019s new ad<\/a> attacking Udall on energy and other issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cGas prices. Tom Udall\u2019s fault,\u201d the parrot says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTom Udall\u2019s fault?\u201d the narrator asks. \u201cWhile Tom Udall was working for more alternative energy, Steve Pearce voted against alternative energy and to give billions to big oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad ends with Udall saying he \u201cdid find a good use for Steve Pearce\u2019s negative ads\u201d and sticking a newspaper ad from Pearce in the bottom of the parrot\u2019s cage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Udall campaign has created a Web site, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pollybigoil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PollyBigOil.com<\/a>, to accompany the ad. Visitors to the site \u201ccan put words into Polly Big Oil\u2019s mouth, just like big oil does to Pearce,\u201d a release from the Udall campaign states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defendersactionfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund<\/a>, which is backing Udall, unveiled a new ad today hitting Pearce for what a news release calls \u201cblurry details of the sale of Pearce\u2019s oil business to an energy company and potential conflicts of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s the 60-second TV ad:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/t4MGUSJF7ZQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/t4MGUSJF7ZQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad points out that in August 2003 Pearce chaired a House committee hearing on natural gas at which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keyenergy.com\/main.php\" target=\"_blank\">Key Energy Services<\/a> lobbied for reduced industry regulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBehind the scenes, Pearce is privately negotiating the sale of his own company to the same Key Energy,\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Months before the hearing, Pearce reported the value of his company at less than $5 million, the ad states, but shortly after the hearing Key Energy bought the company for $12 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cPearce has refused to disclose the details of the sale despite the serious questions raised,\u201d the narrator states. \u201cWas Pearce caught in a conflict of interest? Was Pearce paid an inflated price for his company? Call Steve Pearce and tell him <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> deserves answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Pearce campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment on both ads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce Campaign Manager John Billingsley said in a news release that Udall is getting desperate because he\u2019s lost 20 points in the polls. Pearce did vote for tax breaks for oil companies, the release states, but they were \u201cto increase drilling &#8212; something Americans support 2 to 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn almost the same breath they say Udall supports drilling but then brag about his vote to kill incentives to drill,\u201d Billingsley added. \u201cThe ad proves he\u2019s willing to say and do just about anything to mislead voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSteve Pearce proudly defends his record to increase drilling and access to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s resources.  He believes it\u2019s the key to energy independence and protecting our economy and our jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It should be pointed out that, despite what Pearce\u2019s news release says, <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/udall-moves-further-ahead-in-new-senate.html\">the newest poll<\/a> has Udall\u2019s lead over Pearce increasing.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Pearce is getting hammered by two new TV ads that were unveiled today.
