{"id":3720,"date":"2008-09-16T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-16T20:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/obamas-manager-talks-about-the-importance-of-nm\/"},"modified":"2008-09-16T14:55:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-16T20:55:00","slug":"obamas-manager-talks-about-the-importance-of-nm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/obamas-manager-talks-about-the-importance-of-nm\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama&#8217;s manager talks about the importance of NM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNAbCNsSUDI\/AAAAAAAAIuM\/7ZqNA7TGZtE\/s1600-h\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SNAbCNsSUDI\/AAAAAAAAIuM\/7ZqNA7TGZtE\/s200\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246723290735726642\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Even after Thursday\u2019s visit by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> to Espa\u00f1ola, expect the Democratic presidential nominee and his running mate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/learn\/meet_joe.php\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a>, to be in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> again before the Nov. 4 election.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But it\u2019s personal contact by people who live in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and support Obama that is critical to his chances of winning the state and the presidential race, Obama Campaign Manager <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Plouffe\" target=\"_blank\">David Plouffe<\/a> said today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to organize in every corner of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d Plouffe said on a conference call with reporters. He added that the campaign has a strong staff in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> but the focus is on volunteers &#8212; \u201cpeople from communities in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> representing our campaign and being the face of the campaign and doing a lot of the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re big believers in that local-based organizing,\u201d Plouffe said, adding that the campaign has 35 offices in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, which he said is a level of activity sometimes seen in gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races, but not historically seen in one state by a presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Such organization and activity is a big reason, Plouffe claimed, that Hispanics in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> have become \u201cmore like a base for us than a swing group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing very well right now with the Hispanic community in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the reasons we feel so confident in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Plouffe, as he has done in the past, said <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is a critical state for Obama. Winning every state Democratic nominee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnkerry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Kerry<\/a> won in 2004 gets Obama to 252 electoral votes, but he needs 18 more to win, \u201cand we think <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is right at the top of that list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe think it\u2019s one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/president\" target=\"_blank\">Bush<\/a> states from 2004 that\u2019s most likely to flip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ivette Barajas, spokeswoman for Republican presidential nominee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a>, disagreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJohn McCain will do very well in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. He comes from a border state and therefore understands the needs of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> working families,\u201d she said. \u201cMcCain\u2019s economic policies embrace the small-business owners, entrepreneurs and every hard-working New Mexican. Obama, fresh off his $28,500-per-plate, celebrity filled fundraiser in <st1:city st=\"on\">Beverly Hills<\/st1:city>, will be bringing empty promises and more of the same rhetoric to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> on Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> as a key indicator?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Plouffe, in addition to mentioning Hispanics, said the Obama campaign is intentionally targeting American Indians in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and expects results from that. And he said there\u2019s another big indicator that McCain is struggling in the West, despite the fact that he and his running mate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/about\/governorpalin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Palin<\/a> are from western states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSen. McCain is struggling vitally in his own state, not leading us by much there despite the fact that we are not advertising there, so we are watching <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> closely,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/news\/articles\/2008\/08\/20\/20080820McCainpoll0820.html\" target=\"_blank\">One recent poll<\/a> has McCain leading Obama by 10 points in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Plouffe said the race in <st1:state st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:state> is indicative of a greater reality: Western voters are independent, and independents are \u201ceven more sour\u201d on <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> than other voters. He said McCain will lose the \u201cchange\u201d argument to Obama in part because the McCain campaign employs a number of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> lobbyists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe\u2019s much more <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state> than he is <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> these days,\u201d Plouffe said of McCain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The race will come down to two things, Plouffe said: who can win over undecideds and \u201csoft supporters\u201d of the other candidate, and who can more effectively turnout his supporters to vote. Plouffe said McCain has done a lot in recent days to excite the GOP base, but he\u2019s doing little to expand that base past the level of support President Bush won in 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, he said, Obama is well on his way to expanding his base of support beyond what Kerry won in 2004. That is why the campaign is confident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama will return to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and Biden will be in the state before the election, Plouffe said. But he didn\u2019t release specifics about where or when.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe obviously know that one of Barack Obama\u2019s strengths is he goes after voters in every corner of every state,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 Some of those are base areas for us where we\u2019re really trying to drive up turnout.
