{"id":3716,"date":"2008-09-15T15:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-15T21:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/527-group-helped-herrera-win-in-2006\/"},"modified":"2008-09-15T15:48:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-15T21:48:00","slug":"527-group-helped-herrera-win-in-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/09\/527-group-helped-herrera-win-in-2006\/","title":{"rendered":"527 group helped Herrera win in 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SM7YmXrBZbI\/AAAAAAAAIt0\/k1Dc4VYOjLI\/s1600-h\/Herrera,+Mary.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SM7YmXrBZbI\/AAAAAAAAIt0\/k1Dc4VYOjLI\/s200\/Herrera,+Mary.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246368769634297266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Center for Public Integrity<\/a> is highlighting a group that helped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/sos-SecBio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Herrera<\/a> win <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s 2006 secretary of state race in a new posting on its Web site.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The group, a \u201clittle-known 527\u201d called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secstateproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Secretary of State Project<\/a>, \u201craised more than $500,000 in 2006 to ensure no right-leaning secretary of state will swing the 2008 presidential election to the GOP, as they did in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_presidential_election,_2000#Florida\" target=\"_blank\">Florida in 2000<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/news\/story\/10432334\/was_the_2004_election_stolen\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio in 2004<\/a>,\u201d the center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/blog\/entry\/694\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog posting<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That $500,000 helped Democrats win secretary of state races in key states in 2006 &#8212; <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Minnesota<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Ohio<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. The group also supported losing candidates in <st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. In <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, the group\u2019s Web site states, it funded 10 percent of Herrera\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This year, the group is targeting secretary of state races in four additional states, <st1:state st=\"on\">Missouri<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Oregon<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Montana<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">West Virginia<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, the center reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Herrera, according to the group\u2019s Web site, attributed her win in part to the group\u2019s support. She defeated Republican Vickie Perea by 8 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYour support made a big difference to my campaign,\u201d Herrera told the group. \u201c&#8230; Thanks to the help of the Secretary of State Project and its donors, we can make sure every voter is able to cast a ballot that counts on Election Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The group\u2019s mission is to \u201cprotect our elections from dirty Republican tricks,\u201d its Web site states.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Public Integrity is highlighting a group that helped Mary Herrera win New Mexico\u2019s 2006 secretary of state race in a new posting on its Web site.
