\"\"<\/a>U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson<\/a> and Do\u00f1a Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez<\/a> are members of a new team of Republican women assigned to combat \u201csmears\u201d about the party\u2019s vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The two women are among 55 nationwide assigned to the \u201cPalin truth squad.\u201d Wilson<\/st1:city> is one of 19 \u201cnational members\u201d of the group, while Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is labeled a \u201cstate member.\u201d They\u2019re the only members from New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n

According to a news release from John McCain\u2019s campaign<\/a>, the team was formed in response to a Wall Street Journal report<\/a> that Democrats have dispatched 30 lawyers and other operatives to Alaska<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> to dig up dirt about Palin. The group \u201cwill set the record straight against Internet and liberal smears of Governor Palin,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>TheAtlantic.com\u2019s Marc Ambinder<\/a> reported that there has been plenty of accurate information reported that could be considered controversial — \u201cthat Palin sought and obtained earmarks, that she didn\u2019t initially oppose the Bridge to Nowhere, that she raised sales taxes as mayor of Wasilla, that she maintained a working relationship with Sen. Ted Stevens,\u201d but inaccurate information has also spread, including allegations that she \u201ccut special needs funding (she didn\u2019t), was a Buchananite (not true), that she wanted to mandate the teaching of creationism in Alaska public schools (she said that it didn\u2019t have to be taught alongside evolution, although she didn\u2019t oppose it), that her pastor was a Jew for Jesus (a guest pastor at the church was, not her regular pastor), that she was a member of the Alaska Independence Party (her husband was) and that she covered up her daughter\u2019s pregnancy (Nope).\u201d<\/p>\n
