PAUL &#8212; <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is in the front row of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopconvention2008.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican convention<\/a>. Will Cavin, the Chaves County Republican Party chair, and Phil Archuletta, the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> delegate with the most seniority, insist that the TV networks want them close to the cameras for ratings purposes. Stu Spillar, the history teacher from <st1:city st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:city>, talks about <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s history of close elections and our \u201cswing state\u201d status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No other state is bracketed by a neighbor president on one side and a presidential candidate on the other. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laura_Bush\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Bush<\/a> dropped by the <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> delegation for lunch yesterday and invited her \u201c<st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> neighbors\u201d to Crawford to visit anytime. No small state is so spoiled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SL6wywXKdlI\/AAAAAAAAImc\/P6lk8Kk6aMM\/s1600-h\/Rogers,+Pat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SL6wywXKdlI\/AAAAAAAAImc\/P6lk8Kk6aMM\/s200\/Rogers,+Pat.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241821402327840338\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Yesterday we had breakfast with the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> delegation. No, the grits did not have any green chile. The Louisiana\/New Mexico breakfast had been planned for some time before <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s latest troubles. Almost all of that state\u2019s delegation was in good spirits, with the good news from home of only (so far) two hurricane-related deaths. The scope of the evacuation is difficult to appreciate. The loading and transportation of more than the entire population of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> occurred in just a few days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> was the main speaker at the breakfast, along with Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utah.gov\/governor\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huntsman<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Utah<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/burr.senate.gov\/public\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burr<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">North Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, co-chair of the platform committee, and Charlie Black, senior advisor to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">McCain<\/a> campaign, had comments as well. One of McCain\u2019s POW comrades introduced a Medal of Honor winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Our <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> friends are serious political junkies. Several asked about Heather\u2019s chances for a cabinet appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The chairman of their delegation said his notes were prepared weeks ago and he wanted to thank <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> for \u201csending your <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> help\u201d in the aftermath of Katrina. We all were aware that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bernco.gov\/live\/departments.asp?dept=2318\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a> had spent weeks in <st1:state st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:state> with other law enforcement officials from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, but we also found out that Heather\u2019s husband, Reserve Colonel Jay Hone, was also deployed to that state in Katrina\u2019s wake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heather is appearing almost hourly on national radio and TV (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MSNBC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PBS<\/a> and most importantly, of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KOB<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I attended several events for the new national committee members. Hours of the minute details of federal law, about campaign restrictions. A collection of bad lawyer jokes kept going through my mind. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gop.com\/About\/AboutBio.aspx?Guid=440ac9cd-8163-47f5-9c39-eb39d81a9b79\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Duncan<\/a> is the national chairman of the Republican National Committee and a former general counsel. He cautioned people that the job does not include booking Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/about\/governorpalin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Palin<\/a> for campaign visits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Rogers<\/st1:city> is the RNC\u2019s national committeeman from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.
