{"id":3640,"date":"2008-08-28T16:58:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-28T22:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/new-nm-poll-finds-obama-leading-nader-a-factor\/"},"modified":"2008-08-28T16:58:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-28T22:58:00","slug":"new-nm-poll-finds-obama-leading-nader-a-factor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/new-nm-poll-finds-obama-leading-nader-a-factor\/","title":{"rendered":"New NM poll finds Obama leading, Nader a factor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLcuBvgICcI\/AAAAAAAAIiE\/sSbUzuQ6CjA\/s1600-h\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLcuBvgICcI\/AAAAAAAAIiE\/sSbUzuQ6CjA\/s200\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239707298934819266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A new poll suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> is picking up support in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and that independent presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votenader.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Nader<\/a> may be a factor here.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/2008\/poll_main.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">TIME\/CNN\/Opinion Research Corporation poll<\/a>, released Wednesday, had Obama leading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> by 13 points in New Mexico &#8212; 53 percent to 40 percent &#8212; when no other candidates were added into the mix. When Nader and other minor-party candidates were added in, 50 percent said they support Obama, 36 percent said they support McCain and 8 percent said they support Nader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The survey of 659 registered voters was conducted Sunday through Tuesday and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLcuFYyDkeI\/AAAAAAAAIiM\/nJ2wj2P4aLY\/s1600-h\/Nader,+Ralph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLcuFYyDkeI\/AAAAAAAAIiM\/nJ2wj2P4aLY\/s200\/Nader,+Ralph.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239707361555485154\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The poll also looked at other Western states and found Obama with a 5-point lead in <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> and McCain with a 1-point lead in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> when the other candidates weren\u2019t considered. When Nader and others were factored in, McCain led by 1 point in <st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state>, while the two were tied in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Those other candidates &#8212; Nader, Libertarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobbarr2008.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Barr<\/a> and Green <a href=\"http:\/\/votetruth08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cynthia McKinney<\/a> &#8212; are all expected to appear on the ballot in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nader, the poll found, was a factor in all three Western states and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, the other state in which the survey was conducted. He was at 6 percent in <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> and 7 percent in <st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While Nader drew support largely from Obama in the <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> poll, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,1836770,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">TIME Magazine article<\/a> on the poll states, Nader drew votes \u201calmost equally\u201d from Obama and McCain in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, and in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> he \u201csiphoned off significant support from McCain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nader touted the poll\u2019s results in a campaign e-mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cRalph just polled 8 percent in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. It is just remarkable,\u201d the e-mail states. \u201c\u2026 We\u2019re scheduled to be on 45 state ballots by September 12. And we\u2019re ready to rumble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Most other recent <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> polls have shown Obama with a slight lead in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, but one recent poll showed McCain with a narrow advantage. Most polls haven\u2019t considered Nader and the minor-party candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, McCain is out with a new TV ad today in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other states taking a break from the back-and-forth to congratulate Obama for winning the Democratic nomination.
