\"\"<\/a>Former New York Mayor and GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani<\/a> says his party\u2019s contender in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s 1st Congressional District race, Darren White<\/a>, is \u201ca superb candidate\u201d whose opponent is a liberal extremist. <\/p>\n

Giuliani said White has practical experience that will make him a great congressman. He was in Albuquerque<\/st1:city> on Wednesday to attend a fundraiser for White, the Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> sheriff.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here for Darren because I believe he would make a superb member of Congress. This is an easy one, to support him,\u201d Giuliani said in a phone interview. \u201cHe\u2019s got the same kind of background I have — a law enforcement background. This is someone who has tremendous experience. \u2026 the kind of person that you need at a time in which safety and security is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Giuliani, a former U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney, said White would also keep taxes low and government growth under control. His opponent, Democrat Martin Heinrich<\/a>, \u201ccertainly isn\u2019t a strong supporter of the military, wants to raise taxes, wants to increase government spending,\u201d Giuliani said. He called Heinrich \u201cfar left, further to the left than most Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Heinrich spokeswoman Angela Barranco said Heinrich \u201chas three Central New Mexico sheriffs<\/span> testifying to his support for law enforcement, not a high-paid Republican lobbyist from New York City<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Martin is the only one in this race to have balanced a budget, and in Congress he will prioritize middle-class New Mexico<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:state> families<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cGiuliani came to New Mexico<\/span><\/st1:state> to repay Darren White for his loyalty chairing George W. Bush<\/span>\u2019s 2004 reelection campaign in Bernalillo<\/span><\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype>,<\/span> and for his support of the war in Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><\/span> and the failed economic policies of the last eight years,\u201d Barranco said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Giuliani, who was at the Democrats\u2019 convention in Denver<\/st1:city> before traveling to Albuquerque<\/st1:city>, said during the interview that New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is an \u201cenormously important state\u201d in the 2008 election. He said Republican presidential candidate John McCain<\/a> — who defeated him earlier this year in the primary — has a strong chance of beating Democrat Barack Obama<\/a> in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a Republican who has worked with Democrats. In fact, he\u2019s gotten in trouble with our party for doing that,\u201d Giuliani said. \u201cI think he\u2019s somebody that Democrats — particularly those who are somewhat disillusioned with Sen. Obama — I think he\u2019s somebody they could vote for.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Giuliani said McCain doesn\u2019t have New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in the bag. He has to convince voters here and elsewhere that he would keep America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> safe, move toward energy independence, keep taxes low, keep government expenditures under control and grow the economy, Giuliani said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n
