{"id":3618,"date":"2008-08-25T12:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-25T18:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/richardson-was-on-obamas-short-list-for-vp\/"},"modified":"2008-08-25T12:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-25T18:07:00","slug":"richardson-was-on-obamas-short-list-for-vp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/richardson-was-on-obamas-short-list-for-vp\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson was on Obama&#8217;s short list for VP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLL1EDAZg4I\/AAAAAAAAId0\/O5dkzaTQhVI\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SLL1EDAZg4I\/AAAAAAAAId0\/O5dkzaTQhVI\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238518766460568450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/24\/us\/politics\/24deconstruct.html?_r=2&amp;sq=&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;oref=slogin&amp;adxnnlx=1219680534-f7njKCoWhZC0gMEmS\/wMWA\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> confirmed in a weekend article what many already suspected: Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> was on the short list of people <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> considered to be his running mate.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The six candidates who were given \u201cextensive consideration\u201d for the vice presidential spot on the Democratic ticket, according to the Times, were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/learn\/meet_joe.php\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> &#8212; who Obama ultimately picked &#8212; Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bayh.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Evan Bayh<\/a> of Indiana, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Kaine<\/a> of Virginia, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ks.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kathleen Sebelius<\/a> of Kansas, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/dodd.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Dodd<\/a> of Connecticut and Richardson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ultimately, all but Dodd and Richardson made it to the final round, when the campaign began writing speeches and making plans to announce any of the other four as Obama\u2019s running mate, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> told the newspaper on Saturday that Obama called him in early June to tell him he was on the list, but Obama warned <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u201cthat it would be an intensive process, and asked him to consider whether he was up for it.\u201d The newspaper reported that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> checked with his wife before calling back to say he was up to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he was \u201calerted weeks later that his vetting process had gone well,\u201d but Obama ultimately called him last week to tell him, \u201cI\u2019ve made up my mind, and we\u2019re going in another direction.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times confirmed in a weekend article what many already suspected: Gov.
