{"id":3600,"date":"2008-08-19T16:42:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-19T22:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/udall-responds-to-club-for-growth-attack-ad\/"},"modified":"2008-08-19T16:42:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-19T22:42:00","slug":"udall-responds-to-club-for-growth-attack-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/udall-responds-to-club-for-growth-attack-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Udall responds to Club for Growth attack ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democratic U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> is out today with a new TV ad responding to <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/club-for-growth-attacks-udall-in-new-tv.html\">an attack ad<\/a> unveiled this weekend by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubforgrowth.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Club for Growth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Calling the group an out-of-state ally of his Republican opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, the Udall campaign announced its ad today in a news release. Here\u2019s the 30-second spot:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/heQ6IOMu3Zg&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/heQ6IOMu3Zg&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cA <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> special interest wants to pick our senator,\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator states. \u201cFirst they falsely attacked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heatherforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> (Pearce\u2019s primary opponent). Now it\u2019s Tom Udall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOn energy, Tom Udall says do it all. More domestic drilling, including some offshore. Nuclear power. And alternative energy like wind and solar,\u201d the narrator states. \u201cSteve Pearce voted against alternative energy nine times. That\u2019s why he got hundreds of thousand dollars from Big Oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Club for Growth endorsed Pearce in the primary, bundled hundreds of thousands of dollars for his campaign and spent hundreds of thousands more on the ads attacking <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. The group is spending $150,000 to run the ad attacking Udall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe same ideological billionaires from Texas, New York and New Jersey are back with more fraudulent and misleading attack ads &#8212; this time attempting to smear Tom Udall\u2019s record of doing what\u2019s right,\u201d Udall campaign spokeswoman Marissa Padilla said in the news release. \u201cSteve Pearce\u2019s out-of-state accomplices, whose Swift Boat-style ads drove Senator <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">(Pete) Domenici<\/a> to spurn their misleading and unfair attacks in the primary, are once again trying to prop up his struggling campaign and influence this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Padilla was referring to Domenici\u2019s statement during the primary that the group was \u201cunfairly distorting (<st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s) record.\u201d The Udall news release also aimed to capitalize on this primary-election quote from <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBillionaires from <st1:state st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Jersey<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> are trying to buy Senator Domenici\u2019s seat in order to satisfy their narrow ideological agenda, and they have found a perfect accomplice in Steve Pearce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Pearce campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is another attempt by Tom Udall to divert attention away from his embarrassing record of opposing domestic drilling, cutting funding for investments in nuclear energy and raising taxes,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cHe is running, ducking, dodging and performing more flip-flops than an Olympic gymnast.
