{"id":3592,"date":"2008-08-18T15:57:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-18T21:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/obama-praises-guv-during-campaign-event-in-abq\/"},"modified":"2008-08-18T15:57:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-18T21:57:00","slug":"obama-praises-guv-during-campaign-event-in-abq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/obama-praises-guv-during-campaign-event-in-abq\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama praises guv during campaign event in ABQ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKnwyIWYDQI\/AAAAAAAAGgM\/p-DRGcULj-0\/s1600-h\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKnwyIWYDQI\/AAAAAAAAGgM\/p-DRGcULj-0\/s200\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235980785820372226\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>With the biggest political question of the week being who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> will choose to be his running mate, the Democratic presidential candidate had strong praise for Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> during an appearance earlier today in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama called <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u201cone of the finest public servants of our generation, somebody who has done so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou know, he can\u2019t fit everything on one r\u00e9sum\u00e9,\u201d Obama told a crowd of about 2,000 people at <st1:placename st=\"on\">Rio Grande<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">High School<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city>\u2019s <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">South<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Valley<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Obama campaign and <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s staff aren\u2019t commenting on the VP process, but speculation has increased in recent days that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has found his way onto Obama\u2019s short list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKnw1V8UQNI\/AAAAAAAAGgU\/wxMpxm5zcrY\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKnw1V8UQNI\/AAAAAAAAGgU\/wxMpxm5zcrY\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235980841008775378\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Obama also had high praise for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, who, like <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, were with him at the town-hall meeting. In praising Bingaman, his Senate colleague, Obama said, \u201cIf you look up in the dictionary the word gentleman, you would see this man\u2019s face.\u201d He asked the crowd to give Udall, the Democrats’ U.S. Senate candidate, \u201ca big round of applause and your vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That was the second of two events Obama held in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> today. At the first, a town-hall meeting at a library attended by a few dozen people, Obama said he hasn\u2019t been surprised by sharp attacks from Republicans, and characterized the election as a critical choice between two contrasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to seize this opportunity, and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s going to be critical to doing that. This is going to be a close election,\u201d Obama said. \u201c\u2026 If we don\u2019t change how we do business right now, then 20 years from now we might look back and see that America has become a place that isn\u2019t living up to its ideals and its values, that isn\u2019t what we want America to be. I don\u2019t accept that future for my children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the high-school event, Obama spoke about compromise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI intend to get things done as president. \u2026 That means that, yes, sometimes we\u2019re going to have to compromise to get things done. That\u2019s how a democracy works,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to be elected as monarch. I\u2019m going to be elected as president and I\u2019m going to have a Congress to deal with and I\u2019m going to have constituents to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama described his core principles as working for ordinary people and upholding the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI will never waver from those principles even if I compromise on some issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">GOP attacks<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While the first event was aimed at women, Obama\u2019s second and larger event was focused on Hispanics, both through its location in the <st1:placename st=\"on\">South<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Valley<\/st1:placetype> and the introduction of Obama to the crowd by a Hispanic woman from <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Party of New Mexico<\/a> was quick to attack in a news release, providing this quote from Marco Gonzales, a GOP attorney and former congressional candidate:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNew Mexico Hispanics, Republican and Democrat, know that Barack Obama\u2019s big-city, <st1:city st=\"on\">Chicago<\/st1:city> values won\u2019t play here in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d Gonzales said in the statement. \u201cBarack Obama will raise our taxes and increase gasoline and energy costs, making it even harder for struggling American families to make ends meet. \u2026 Barack Obama is out of touch with <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s working families and he is out of touch with issues important to Hispanics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The GOP was also quick to preempt Obama\u2019s visit with a conference call hosted by U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, who called Obama a flip-flopper on energy and said Americans can\u2019t trust him to keep their taxes low.
