\"\"<\/a>There\u2019s been a lot of attention in the past few days on today\u2019s event at which retiring U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., will pledge his support for his party\u2019s nominee for the seat he\u2019s vacating. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Republican Steve Pearce<\/a> put out a news release<\/a> on Monday stating that Domenici \u201cwill be endorsing my candidacy for his seat after a long and distinguished career.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cPlease join me\u2026 for this historic occasion for our state,\u201d Pearce said in the release.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The Associated Press<\/a> was quick to put out a story quoting a Domenici staffer as confirming \u201cthat the longtime senator will announce his backing of Pearce Thursday in Albuquerque\u201d and stating that Domenici\u2019s \u201csupport of Pearce comes nearly three months after he endorsed Pearce\u2019s rival\u201d in the primary.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Even the Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> publication The Hill<\/a> wrote about today\u2019s event, stating that Domenici \u201cis set to endorse Rep. Steve Pearce\u2019s (R) candidacy for his seat more than three months after Domenici endorsed Rep. Heather Wilson<\/a> (R) over Pearce in her unsuccessful primary bid.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The implication of the articles is that Domenici hadn\u2019t previously pledged his support to Pearce. Political blogger Joe Monahan<\/a> wrote just that in a Wednesday posting:<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cSome e-mailers pointed out that Pete\u2019s nod will come over two months after the primary and claimed it shows he remains unexcited by the Pearce candidacy,\u201d Monahan wrote. \u201cBut Domenici was in no position to endorse Pearce in June. Was he going to turn around just days after endorsing Heather and rub nerves raw by coming for Pearce? Also, coming so soon would have made Domenici look like the opportunist of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

What they\u2019ve all apparently forgotten is that Domenici did endorse Pearce the day after his preferred candidate, Wilson, lost to Pearce in the hotly contested June 3 primary. Seeking to unite the party in the face of a tough general-election battle against Democrat Tom Udall<\/a>, Domenici and Wilson both endorsed Pearce on June 4.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to doing all I can to support Congressman Pearce\u2019s candidacy in the general election and help him become our state\u2019s next U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> senator,\u201d Domenici said on that day in a prepared statement<\/a>. \u201cI believe his tenacity during the primary season proves he has what it takes to wage a battle to win in November.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
