{"id":3559,"date":"2008-08-12T10:18:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/debate-about-debates-continues-in-2nd-district-race\/"},"modified":"2008-08-12T10:18:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T16:18:00","slug":"debate-about-debates-continues-in-2nd-district-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/debate-about-debates-continues-in-2nd-district-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Debate about debates continues in 2nd District race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKG345bfGTI\/AAAAAAAAGbk\/xfVQy0eZDxQ\/s1600-h\/Teague,+Harry.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKG345bfGTI\/AAAAAAAAGbk\/xfVQy0eZDxQ\/s200\/Teague,+Harry.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233666430097889586\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Democratic 2nd Congressional District candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> is seeking to put an end to <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/to-debate-or-not-to-debate.html\">allegations that he\u2019s ducking debates<\/a>, but Republican opponent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a> isn\u2019t letting up.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Teague\u2019s campaign put out a news release on Monday announcing his \u201cdebate and forum schedule.\u201d In addition to two events that have already taken place &#8212; one in Mescalero sponsored by the Farm Bureau and one in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> sponsored by the Association of Commerce and Industry &#8212; the Teague campaign said he plans to participate in three televised debates and two forums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That includes a televised debate sponsored by The Municipal League on Friday in <st1:city st=\"on\">Clovis<\/st1:city>, an Oct. 9 debate on KRWG-TV in <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> and an Oct. 19 debate sponsored by the Albuquerque Journal and KOAT-TV in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, Teague claimed. The forums are on Sept. 4 in Grants and sometime in October in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Carlsbad<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKG39Jtj1GI\/AAAAAAAAGb0\/M89WIbZR3dI\/s1600-h\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SKG39Jtj1GI\/AAAAAAAAGb0\/M89WIbZR3dI\/s200\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233666503188141154\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The release states that Teague \u201chas now agreed to participate in more forums and debates than the presidential candidates and anticipates participating in other forums as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe want the people of the 2nd Congressional District to see the differences between Harry and his opponent,\u201d Teague campaign manager Frank Costanzo said in the release. \u201cHarry Teague supports the minimum wage, but as a <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> lobbyist Ed Tinsley fought against it. Harry Teague provides his employees good wages; Ed Tinsley refuses to open a restaurant in cities where a decent minimum wage is the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley shot back in his own news release that there is only one scheduled debate he knows about &#8212; the KOAT\/Journal debate on Oct. 19. Tinsley campaign spokesman Jim Pettit said the campaign hasn\u2019t \u201creceived anything from KRWG.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Municipal League event, Tinsley\u2019s news release states, isn\u2019t a debate. It\u2019s a forum that is closed to the public, \u201cand candidates will not be allowed to ask each other any questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSimilar forums including both candidates were held July 26 in Ruidoso and Aug. 7 in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>,\u201d the release states. \u201cHere again, candidates were not allowed to ask each other questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, each candidate was allowed to submit one question that the moderator asked of the other candidate. Tinsley wanted more, but that\u2019s all Teague would allow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u201cEd Tinsley believes voters get more information through a debate format, not through speeches on issue positions that people can read off a campaign Web site,\u201d Pettit said in the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, Tinsley also released on Monday a three-minute Web video in which he discusses his support for increased domestic and offshore drilling and his energy plan.
