The Santa Fe New Mexican has discovered that, in spite of a prior statement from the Attorney General\u2019s Office, an embezzlement investigation focused in part on the live-in girlfriend of a former Albuquerque mayor has been ongoing for more than three years.<\/p>\n

From the newspaper\u2019s article<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say time is relative.<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently, the last few years at Attorney General Gary King\u2019s office seem more like \u2018several months\u2019 to at least one staffer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s because the staffer previously told the newspaper that the AG\u2019s office had received information about the alleged embezzlement of $3 million from a Santa Fe hospital \u201cseveral months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

But:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat statement contradicted a statement from the Santa Fe hospital that CEO Alex Valdez had turned over relevant documents about the case to the attorney general in 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis week, the newspaper received documents as part of a public-records request that indicate the hospital representative was correct: King\u2019s office has known about the allegations since early 2008 and began investigating them in September 2008.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n


\nOops, King told the newspaper \u2013 at least sort of:<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I do have to do a personal\u00a0mea culpa\u00a0to everybody that thinks that several months ago apparently means like three months ago or something like that,\u201d King said. \u201cI think it was meant to be indeterminate.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think \u2018several months\u2019 was particularly descriptive of how long we\u2019ve had the case,\u201d King said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think it was a lie, either. Several months is not a good description based on human experience of how much several months is, but basically it was trying to be a way to say that we can\u2019t make a specific comment on any particular case that is under investigation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The AG is investigating allegations that the hospital\u2019s former CFO and three others \u2013 including Loretta Mares, the live-in girlfriend of former Albuquerque Mayor Martin Ch\u00e1vez, who is now running for Congress<\/a> \u2013 \u201cconspired to embezzle $3 million from the hospital by billing for technology services that in some cases were never delivered,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n
