Nuclear power can make <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> free from Middle Eastern oil cartels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNuclear power will make energy affordable, <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> prosperous and keep American jobs here instead of being shipped overseas,\u201d Pearce says in the ad. \u201cBut Tom Udall and the extreme environmentalists oppose nuclear energy and offshore drilling. That\u2019s bad for <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. I support them. It\u2019s just that simple,\u201d Pearce says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In recent days, Pearce has hammered Udall on the drilling and nuclear issues in <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/pearces-first-tv-ad-promotes-nuclear.html\">television<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/images\/2008-08-06_Abq_Jo_Pearce-Full_Page_Ad.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">newspaper<\/a> ads. Republicans in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> believe the energy issue is the one on which they have the advantage among the American people in an otherwise left-leaning year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A Udall campaign spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1:50 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall spokeswoman Marissa Padilla released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSteve Pearce kicked off his campaign with false negative attack ads. It\u2019s no wonder. If I had his record of carrying the water for big oil, special interests and George W. Bush, I wouldn\u2019t have anything positive to say either,\u201d she said. \u201cTom Udall supports a balanced, multifaceted approach to addressing our nation\u2019s energy dilemma.
