He was being recognized at one of many events in the past year related to the development of the Southwest Regional Spaceport for his work to keep the spaceport dream alive.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At every event I\u2019ve attended since, he was also recognized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sugerman died Thursday at his home in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> at the age of 86. The cause of his death was not released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A commemorative plaque in his honor will be carried on the first rocket launched from the spaceport by UP Aerospace next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sugerman, a retired Air Force colonel, joined the staff of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>\u2019s Physical Science Laboratory in 1977. In the Air Force he worked in missile development. At the PSL he participated in rocket and missile launches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As a community volunteer, he worked on preparing youths for high-tech careers and promoting economic development in <st1:place st=\"on\">Southern  New Mexico<\/st1:place>. He co-founded the High-Tech Consortium of Southern New Mexico and the Southwest Space Task Force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He pushed and pushed and pushed to keep the dream of a spaceport in <st1:place st=\"on\">Southern New Mexico<\/st1:place> alive, even when the dream seemed dead.<span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Space Grant Consortium\u2019s building at NMSU was named for Sugerman in 2004. (He\u2019s pictured above at the ceremony with Congressman Steve Pearce and then-NMSU Regent Jim Manatt.) The X Prize Foundation recently opened an office in the building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">It\u2019s sad that he died weeks before a chance to see the first rocket launch from the spaceport.
