{"id":3523,"date":"2008-08-01T09:12:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-01T15:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/pearce-touts-poll-that-shows-him-trailing-by-8-points\/"},"modified":"2008-08-01T09:12:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-01T15:12:00","slug":"pearce-touts-poll-that-shows-him-trailing-by-8-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/08\/pearce-touts-poll-that-shows-him-trailing-by-8-points\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce touts poll that shows him trailing by 8 points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJMoXMUzaVI\/AAAAAAAAGVk\/YqdrW7C7wz0\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJMoXMUzaVI\/AAAAAAAAGVk\/YqdrW7C7wz0\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229567971217860946\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Republican Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> is touting as good news a weeks-old survey that shows him trailing Democratic opponent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> by 8 percentage points.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s because other polls have shown Pearce trailing by much greater margins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, an independent group has set its sights on Pearce in a new TV ad that\u2019s running in the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> television market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zogby.com\/news\/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1534\" target=\"_blank\">Zogby \u201cinteractive analysis\u201d<\/a> &#8212; an online survey of 464 likely voters in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> that Zogby says are representative of the adult population &#8212; had Udall leading Pearce, 49 percent to 41 percent. The margin of error was 4.6 percent, and Zogby states that such surveys were \u201cremarkably accurate\u201d during the 2006 midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJMocOgnxwI\/AAAAAAAAGVs\/IWUFD6XOuOk\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJMocOgnxwI\/AAAAAAAAGVs\/IWUFD6XOuOk\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229568057703646978\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The survey was conducted June 11-30, but it wasn\u2019t released until Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A more recent poll &#8212; a <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/polls-show-hot-prez-race-not-so-hot.html\">Rasmussen Reports poll<\/a> conducted July 24 &#8212; had Udall ahead by 25 points, 59 percent to 34 percent. The survey of 700 likely voters had a margin of error of 4 percentage points. In addition, Rasmussen Reports\u2019 June poll had Udall ahead 28 points. Its May poll had him leading by 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=c0d2220d-0960-4405-b087-eafefa3a7679\" target=\"_blank\">SurveyUSA poll<\/a> released June 2 had Udall beating Pearce in what was then a hypothetical contest (the primary was the next day) by 25 points, 60 percent to 35 percent. That survey of 1,869 registered voters had a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though polls conducted before and after the Zogby survey show Udall with a larger lead, the Pearce campaign touted the Zogby survey &#8212; which it called a \u201cnew\u201d poll &#8212; in a Wednesday news release stating that the poll \u201cshows Udall\u2019s lead crashing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWithering from New Mexicans\u2019 dissatisfaction with high gas prices, Udall\u2019s lead has fallen from nearly 30 points down to single digits,\u201d the Pearce news release states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNew Mexicans are finding out about the real Tom Udall,\u201d Pearce said in the release. \u201cTom and the hysterical environmentalists are standing in the way of American prosperity and making it harder for families struggling to pay high energy costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A Udall campaign spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIndependent, moderate and Hispanic voters are putting Democrat Tom Udall in position to take the seat being vacated by Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>,\u201d the Zogby analysis of the survey states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Moderates favored Udall in the survey by a 2-to-1 margin, according to Zogby. Udall had a 10-percent advantage among independents. Nearly twice as many Hispanics supported Udall than Pearce. The two were even among men, but Udall had a \u201csolid lead\u201d among women, the analysis states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce\u2019s strengths, according to Zogby, \u201care with the traditional GOP voters: regular church goers and gun owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Independent group targets Pearce<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriotmajoritywest.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patriot Majority West<\/a> is out with a new ad targeting Pearce. It\u2019s an independent group whose mission, according to its Web site, is to \u201cpursue new policies that strengthen our national security, boost the economy and create good paying jobs, achieve energy independence, make health care affordable, provide quality education to all children and protect the public safety of all citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s the 30-second spot:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4-A4sBGuVME&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4-A4sBGuVME&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe choice? Depend on foreign oil from countries that hate <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region> or develop clean-energy options here in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator states. \u201cSo why has Congressman Steve Pearce opposed incentives for American-made renewable energy? And why has Congressman Pearce sided with George Bush to give oil companies billions in special tax breaks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTell Congressman Pearce to stop siding with Big Oil.
