{"id":3520,"date":"2008-07-31T15:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-31T21:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/new-mexico-liberty-is-a-new-public-forum-on-the-web\/"},"modified":"2008-07-31T15:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-31T21:07:00","slug":"new-mexico-liberty-is-a-new-public-forum-on-the-web","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/new-mexico-liberty-is-a-new-public-forum-on-the-web\/","title":{"rendered":"New Mexico Liberty is a new public forum on the Web"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A new Web site started by the libertarian-leaning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riograndefoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rio Grande Foundation<\/a> aims to provide \u201ca public forum for open and wide-ranging discussion on matters affecting the life, liberty and well-being of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>\u2019s citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s according to a posting from the man who is running New Mexico Liberty, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexicoliberty.com\/profile\/JimScarantino\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Scarantino<\/a> (who is also <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen2.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/about-jim-scarantino.html\">a columnist<\/a> for Heath Haussamen on New Mexico Politics).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe want this site to be like a public square. You can use the forum as your soap box to get a discussion going,\u201d Scarantino wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexicoliberty.com\/forum\/topic\/show?id=2216122%3ATopic%3A161\" target=\"_blank\">the inaugural posting<\/a> on the site. \u201cWe sorely need quality, challenging, substantive debates in this state. We don\u2019t seem to be getting it from our newspapers and television. Some blogs are doing a good job trying to cover politics. Many blogs are just personal rant sites, or places where hacks push their agendas and candidates. Some bloggers forgot how to think and process information long ago. We can do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Scarantino wrote that the site originated from a frustrated e-mail he sent to Paul Gessing, president of the Rio Grande Foundation, about the \u201cquality of discussion I found on <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>\u2019s political blogs.\u201d Their discussion on how to improve \u201cthe level of political discourse on the Web\u201d led to New Mexico Liberty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though the Rio Grande Foundation started the site, it doesn\u2019t control content, Scarantino wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn that regard, they are being true to their Libertarian values.
