{"id":3514,"date":"2008-07-30T15:31:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-30T21:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/gop-senate-group-will-come-to-pearces-aid\/"},"modified":"2008-07-30T15:31:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-30T21:31:00","slug":"gop-senate-group-will-come-to-pearces-aid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/gop-senate-group-will-come-to-pearces-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP Senate group will come to Pearce&#8217;s aid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJDd61M_ecI\/AAAAAAAAGU0\/c-jPY1N3pRE\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJDd61M_ecI\/AAAAAAAAGU0\/c-jPY1N3pRE\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228923170160867778\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Republican U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> is having a difficult time keeping up with the fundraising of Democratic opponent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, but it appears that help is on the way.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/ensign.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Ensign<\/a>, R-Nev. and chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Republican Senatorial Committee<\/a>, today pledged to match the spending of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dscc.org\/splash_email\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee<\/a> in races in key states including <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and asked GOP senators to transfer money from their own campaigns to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The fundraising arm of Senate Republicans will spend most of that money &#8212; some $44.8 million &#8212; through independent expenditures on races in <st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Maine<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Minnesota<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Mississippi<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">North Carolina<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Oregon<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJDd-lFdpfI\/AAAAAAAAGU8\/UTst650zOjU\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SJDd-lFdpfI\/AAAAAAAAGU8\/UTst650zOjU\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228923234553800178\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The NRSC currently doesn\u2019t have the cash to do that. It had $24.6 million on hand at the end of June, while the DSCC had $46.3 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/schumer.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> and the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee have recently placed television buys totaling approximately $44.8 million in targeted Senate races across the country. I will not allow our Republican candidates to be outspent by the DSCC this cycle,\u201d Ensign said in a news release. \u201cWhile I am aware we do not currently have the funds to match the DSCC, I am giving our (Independent Expenditure) Unit this budget on faith &#8212; faith that my Republican colleagues will step up to the challenge and transfer the funds necessary to remain competitive with the Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The campaigns of Pearce and Udall did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Financially, Pearce has not been able to keep up with Udall, who ended June with $2.9 million in the bank. Pearce ended it with $531,624.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, Pearce trails by double-digit margins in several independent polls of the race. Despite those disadvantages, by including Pearce on the list of candidates it will back financially, the NRSC is indicating that it hasn\u2019t given up the seat held by retiring GOP Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>. Today\u2019s announcement follows a recent report in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/congressdaily\/cda_20080728_7557.php\" target=\"_blank\">National Journal<\/a> that many Washington Republicans expect Pearce to lose to Udall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/scorecard\/0708\/Ensign_challenges_colleagues.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Politico<\/a>, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/cornyn.senate.gov\/public\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Cornyn<\/a>, R-Texas, has already met Engisn\u2019s challenge, announcing today that he will donate $250,000 from his campaign account to the NRSC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Matthew Miller, spokesman for the DSCC, told <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/leading-the-news\/ensign-senate-gop-will-match-dems-dollar-for-dollar-2008-07-30.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a> that money isn\u2019t the problem for Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThey\u2019re in trouble because they\u2019re out of step with the public\u2019s desire for change in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state>, and it\u2019s going to take more than promises from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to bail them out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, John Randall, online communications director for the NRSC, said in an e-mail that Democrats may have more money, but they are \u201csorely trailing in solutions\u201d on issues including energy and lowering taxes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c\u2026 now that these are campaigns of ideas, Democrats are on the defensive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 8:10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are pleased to have Senator Ensign\u2019s full support,\u201d he said. \u201cWe know he agrees with us that now is the time for a comprehensive energy policy and that Tom Udall and Chuck Schumer side with the environmental extremists who oppose expanding <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> domestic energy production.
