{"id":3513,"date":"2008-07-30T14:43:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-30T20:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/rocket-racing-league-finally-gets-off-the-ground\/"},"modified":"2008-07-30T14:43:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-30T20:43:00","slug":"rocket-racing-league-finally-gets-off-the-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/rocket-racing-league-finally-gets-off-the-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocket Racing League finally gets off the ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketracingleague.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Racing League<\/a> finally got off the ground on Tuesday, but it has delayed its first exhibition race yet again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The league\u2019s Rocket Racer took to the skies for the first time at an air show in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Oshkosh<\/st1:City>,  <st1:state st=\"on\">Wis.<\/st1:State><\/st1:place> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s video of the flight:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/JEPr3DRUS7Y&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/JEPr3DRUS7Y&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"340\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cToday was truly a milestone not only in the history of the Rocket Racing League and aviation in general, but in the future of sports and entertainment,\u201d said Rocket Racing League founder and CEO Granger Whitelaw. \u201cThis first flight proves that by bringing together the technological and business development power of the aerospace industry, we have changed the future of sports and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The league plans additional flight demonstrations on Friday and Saturday at the EAA AirVenture air show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But this was all supposed to happen long ago. The league originally said the first exhibition race would be held in October 2006 at the X Prize Cup in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. That didn\u2019t happen. Most recently, the league said it would hold exhibition races this year at the Wisconsin air show, in October at the X Prize Cup in <st1:city st=\"on\">Alamogordo<\/st1:city> and in November at Aviation Nation, an air show in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Vegas<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/30\/sports\/othersports\/30rocket.html?_r=2&amp;pagewanted=print&amp;oref=slogin&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a>, the league still plans exhibition races later this year in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The company hasn\u2019t been able to recruit teams as easily as it originally anticipated and has had funding delays. But it broke ground on its first hangars at the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> airport in January and has recruited several teams to participate. It plans to make Las Cruces its worldwide headquarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The league plans races that pit up to 10 racers against each other on virtual, closed-circuit tracks in the sky. The racers can fly at up to 320 mph, and the league plans to eventually hold races at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rocket Racing League finally got off the ground on Tuesday, but it has delayed its first exhibition race yet again.
