{"id":3509,"date":"2008-07-30T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-30T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dona-ana-countys-independent-streak-leads-the-state\/"},"modified":"2008-07-30T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-30T12:00:00","slug":"dona-ana-countys-independent-streak-leads-the-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dona-ana-countys-independent-streak-leads-the-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Do\u00f1a Ana County&#8217;s independent streak leads the state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/IndyVoters.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/IndyVoters.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228685274355389362\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Apparently, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> is a fairly independently minded place &#8212; at least when it comes to politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Currently, 18 percent of the county\u2019s registered voters have declined to state a party affiliation, and that number is growing: Some 33 percent of people who registered to vote from January to June in the county are independents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s no secret that independents are a growing sector of the electorate in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and that young people are at least partly responsible for that trend. Though national voter-registration statistics aren\u2019t available by party affiliation, about a third of the nation\u2019s voters call themselves independent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename>\u2019s percentage of registered independents is greater than the state average of 15 percent, and only <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Los Alamos<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> has as high a percentage of independents as Do\u00f1a Ana. In addition, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>\u2019s independent voter population is growing faster than that of any other county in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sandy Buffett, who heads the Albuquerque-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvnm.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Conservation Voters of New Mexico<\/a>, said she isn\u2019t sure why the number of independents is increasing so rapidly in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, but her group has seen a sharp increase in political activity in the county in recent years that coincides with the rise of independents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That political awakening has led to a shift to the left in government: Democrats won two right-leaning state House seats and a county commission seat in 2006, and progressives took control of the Las Cruces City Council in November and January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Buffett said the increase in political activism is apparent in the number of people who are attending political and government meetings and getting involved, and also in the number of young people who have run for office in recent years. She said the level of activity in <st1:city st=\"on\">Las  Cruces<\/st1:city> isn\u2019t matched anywhere in the state, including <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI wish we could get that all over the state, because people are mobilized and active in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Why <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Some political analysts and watchers interviewed for this article had ideas to explain the rapid rise of independents in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, but many others said it\u2019s a mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Matthew Henderson, who heads the voter-registration group <a href=\"http:\/\/acorn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACORN<\/a> in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, said a lot of young people have been among the thousands of people the group has registered to vote in the state\u2019s second-most populous county this year, and that\u2019s at least partly responsible for the trend. Though many college students register to vote using their parents\u2019 addresses, which are often located in other counties, this year many students at <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> have been registering using local dorm-room or apartment addresses, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the trend in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> puts it ahead of the other <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> county with a significant urban area and a large university &#8212; <st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype>, which includes <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> and the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. Some 16 percent of that county\u2019s 352,596 registered voters were independents on May 23, and 25 percent of those who registered to vote in the first six months of the year in that county declined to state a party affiliation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Henderson<\/st1:city> said among southwestern states, he has seen an independent movement similar to that in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> only in some suburban counties around <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Brian Sanderoff, an Albuquerque-based pollster, also cited NMSU as a factor in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>\u2019s large independent movement, but said registration can also be influenced \u201cby the organizational strengths of the political parties and candidates.\u201d He also said \u201cthe mood of the county, state and nation affects the proportions who register a particular way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats and Republicans have both lost ground to independents in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> in recent years. In July 2004, 53 percent of its 83,178 registered voters were Democrats, 30 percent were Republicans, 15 percent were independents and about 2 percent were members of other political parties. On July 18 of this year, according to numbers released by the county, 50 percent of its 100,547 registered voters were Democrats, 29 percent were Republicans, 18 percent were independents and 3 percent were members of other political parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Across the state, 50 percent of the almost 1.1 million registered voters were Democrats on May 23, while 33 percent were Republicans, 15 percent were independents and 2 percent were members of other parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Hard times for Republicans<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Until recently, Sanderoff said, the independent trend came at the expense of Democrats, but Republicans are currently taking a hit. In <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, the percentage of people who registered as independents from January to June &#8212; 33 percent &#8212; was significantly higher than the 20 percent who registered as Republicans. During that same time, 46 percent registered as Democrats, and fewer than 1 percent registered with another party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other counties where independents topped Republicans in voter registration from January to June were Bernalillo (25 percent to 21 percent), Luna (27 percent to 26 percent), McKinley (24 percent to 14 percent), San Miguel (14 percent to 12 percent), <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city> (20 percent to 17 percent) and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Taos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> (18 percent to 9 percent). Independents didn\u2019t top Democrats in voter registration from January to June in any <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Josh Geise, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">state Democratic Party<\/a>, pointed, like Sanderoff, to the recent hard times for Republicans. He said voters \u201care leaving the Republican Party because they are disappointed in politicians that haven\u2019t represented their interests in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Democratic Party of New Mexico is excited to have candidates at all levels that truly appeal to and are speaking to the concerns of independent voters, like the faltering Bush economy, the war in Iraq as well as government accountability and transparency,\u201d Geise said in a statement released by the party. \u201cThe message of change that Democrats are talking about has resonated with independents, especially those who feel the Republican Party has abandoned them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">State GOP<\/a> spokesman Scott Darnell, meanwhile, said in an interview that Republicans \u201cfully recognize that New Mexicans, and Americans in general, are tired of the gridlock and inaction in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> &#8212; by all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWith <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. (John) McCain<\/a> at the top of our ticket, we are excited by the prospect of more moderate and independent voters embracing his candidacy, seeing him as an effective and competent leader and someone who has always put his country ahead of his party and special-interest groups,\u201d Darnell said. \u201c<st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> will be a critical battleground in the upcoming election, and the candidates who simply offer more effective solutions to the burdens faced by New Mexicans will win independent and cross-over votes.
