He said a recent study by the <a href=\"http:\/\/advanced.jhu.edu\/academic\/government\/hvp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hispanic Voter Project<\/a> at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Johns<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Hopkins<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> confirms that the money the campaign will spend to reach Hispanics is of \u201ca size and scope that has never been undertaken in the history of presidential politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Linda Chavez Thompson, vice chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic National Committee<\/a>, said on the conference call that she believes Hispanics will pick the next president because they play a key role in several critical battleground states. Sanchez said the money will be spent in every state to coincide with Obama\u2019s 50-state strategy, but a high percentage of the money will be poured into <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> &#8212; swing states with large Hispanic populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said the money will be spent on voter registration and mobilization activities, paid advertising and efforts at online organizing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama and Republican presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> have been battling for Hispanic support, but multiple polls confirm that Obama has a significant advantage. A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/pewhispanic.org\/reports\/report.php?ReportID=90\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Hispanic Center poll<\/a> found that only 23 percent of Hispanics intend to vote for McCain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCain\u2019s pollster has said that the Republican needs <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/scant-hispanic-support-threatens.html\">40 percent of the Hispanic vote<\/a> to win the presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The McCain campaign, in response to Obama\u2019s announcement, released a statement from <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/diaz-balart.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Diaz-Balart<\/a>, R-Fla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cUnlike Barack Obama, John McCain doesn\u2019t need an introduction to the Hispanic Community. John McCain has been working for more than two decades for the values, principles and issues Latinos care about,\u201d Diaz-Balart said. \u201cHispanics will elect the next president of the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> based on who has the best record, experience and is better prepared to move this country forward. John McCain wants to keep taxes low for hardworking families and small business owners; Barack Obama has stated he will raise taxes. John McCain has an energy plan and wants to lower gas prices; Barack Obama has no plan.
