An article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepolitico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Politico<\/a> suggests that, despite McCain\u2019s efforts to reach Hispanics in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other states, he has a big problem.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the article, one top GOP strategist who is now McCain\u2019s pollster has long said that Republicans need 40 percent of the Hispanic vote to win. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/president\" target=\"_blank\">President Bush<\/a> reached that goal in winning re-election in 2004. But recent polls, including <a href=\"http:\/\/pewhispanic.org\/reports\/report.php?ReportID=90\" target=\"_blank\">one released last week<\/a> by the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Pew<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Hispanic<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, show McCain falling far short of that goal. The Pew poll finds that only 23 percent of Hispanics intend to vote for McCain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCain has run two Spanish-language radio ads and one English-language TV ad targeting Hispanics in New Mexico and other states, but polls suggest he isn\u2019t gaining much ground despite those efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou have to understand in a way that the Republican Party is damaged among Hispanics,\u201d Hessy Fernandez, McCain\u2019s spokeswoman for Hispanic media, told The Politico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The biggest problem for McCain? The stance the right wing of his party has taken on immigration.
