{"id":3483,"date":"2008-07-22T10:41:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-22T16:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/udall-challenges-pearce-to-three-debates\/"},"modified":"2008-07-22T10:41:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-22T16:41:00","slug":"udall-challenges-pearce-to-three-debates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/udall-challenges-pearce-to-three-debates\/","title":{"rendered":"Udall challenges Pearce to three debates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIYNy427LvI\/AAAAAAAAGPk\/ZiCvxk21hw4\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIYNy427LvI\/AAAAAAAAGPk\/ZiCvxk21hw4\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225879585517416178\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Democratic U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> challenged his opponent today to three debates before the November election.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall campaign manger Amanda Cooper sent a letter to Bob Carter, chief of staff for Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, challenging Pearce to three debates that would be televised statewide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Asked if he had any response, Pearce\u2019s spokesman, Brian Phillips, said, \u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall\u2019s challenge comes after a disagreement over format <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/aphost07-19-08.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ended hopes of a joint appearance<\/a> at this weekend\u2019s New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau gathering on Saturday in Mescalero. Instead, Udall will speak for 30 minutes, then take questions, and Pearce will do the same when Udall is done. In addition, Udall refused a debate challenge from Pearce several weeks ago, saying there would be plenty of time for debates in the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIYN27XUqtI\/AAAAAAAAGPs\/5V-M6SeHOeg\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIYN27XUqtI\/AAAAAAAAGPs\/5V-M6SeHOeg\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225879654909651666\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Now Udall wants three debates, Cooper wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTo make the decision of who our next senator will be, New Mexicans deserve to see the candidates side-by-side, engaging in a vigorous exchange of ideas with each other,\u201d Cooper wrote. \u201cThey deserve to see where each candidate stands on the issues that matter most to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She proposed that the debates be held after Labor Day, be televised and coordinated to reach every part of the state and include a \u201cvariety of formats to allow the most statewide interaction with the people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cooper wrote that she\u2019ll be contacting Carter in the coming days to set up a meeting to work out the details and finalize a debate schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe hope the Pearce campaign will join us to ensure that all New Mexicans have the opportunity to participate and have their voices heard in this historic United States Senate campaign,\u201d Cooper wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tom Udall challenged his opponent today to three debates before the November election.
