{"id":3475,"date":"2008-07-21T01:21:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-21T07:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dodd-joins-speakers-who-will-honor-domenici-at-nmsu\/"},"modified":"2008-07-21T01:21:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-21T07:21:00","slug":"dodd-joins-speakers-who-will-honor-domenici-at-nmsu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dodd-joins-speakers-who-will-honor-domenici-at-nmsu\/","title":{"rendered":"Dodd joins speakers who will honor Domenici at NMSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIQ5_hMl86I\/AAAAAAAAGOU\/z5sBh_0Zhxk\/s1600-h\/Dodd,+Chris.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIQ5_hMl86I\/AAAAAAAAGOU\/z5sBh_0Zhxk\/s200\/Dodd,+Chris.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225365231062348706\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/dodd.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Dodd<\/a>, a former presidential candidate, will join a prominent and bipartisan group of politicians who will travel to <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> in August to speak at a <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> conference honoring retiring Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dodd will join former Secretary of State <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/personnel\/honorary-chair\/jbaker\/chair_view\" target=\"_blank\">James Baker<\/a>, U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, Energy Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/government\/bodman-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Bodman<\/a>, former U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Lujan_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Manuel Lujan Jr.<\/a> and Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> at the inaugural <a href=\"http:\/\/cahe.nmsu.edu\/domenici_conf\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Domenici Public Policy Conference<\/a> to be held Aug. 20-22 at NMSU, according to a Friday news release from the university. The other speakers had been previously announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dodd, a Democrat from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Connecticut<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>, and Domenici, a Republican, have worked together on mental health issues in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIQ5aOTBo8I\/AAAAAAAAGN0\/9_7Lcd9XOiw\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIQ5aOTBo8I\/AAAAAAAAGN0\/9_7Lcd9XOiw\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225364590333895618\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Other local and national leaders will speak during the event, which will close with a free picnic and free concert performed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randytravis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Randy Travis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The conference is part of <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.nmsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Pete V. Domenici Legacy<\/a>, a statewide effort led by NMSU to honor the senator\u2019s historic tenure. Domenici will retire this year as the longest-serving senator in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> history. In addition to the conference, the project includes the housing of some of Domenici\u2019s papers at NMSU, planning and construction of a building on campus to honor the senator, the formation of the Domenici Institute at NMSU and publication of a book chronicling his service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Conference sessions will focus on topics on which Domenici has concentrated during his career, including energy, mental health and budgetary and fiscal matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is a very exciting event,\u201d Garrey Carruthers, NMSU vice president for economic development and chair of The Pete V. Domenici Legacy, said in a news release. \u201cI\u2019m not sure we have ever seen such a large and distinguished group of leaders gather at NMSU all at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There is no charge for those who register to attend the conference before Aug. 1. The opening ceremony Thursday morning, Dodd\u2019s speech Thursday evening and the picnic and concert on Friday are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other confirmed conference speakers include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utsystem.edu\/news\/2005\/Sandia-RobinsonBio04-04-05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Robinson<\/a>, former ambassador and president emeritus of Sandia National Laboratories; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nami.org\/Template.cfm?Section=Bios1&amp;template=\/ContentManagement\/ContentDisplay.cfm&amp;ContentID=40062\" target=\"_blank\">Michael J. Fitzpatrick<\/a>, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness; William Hoagland, a former member of Domenici\u2019s staff; and <a href=\"http:\/\/cisac.stanford.edu\/people\/siegfriedshecker\/\" target=\"_blank\">Siegfried Hecker<\/a>, co-director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While the conference will take place at NMSU, Carruthers said it is a statewide effort with support and participation from universities around <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Students from NMSU, Do\u00f1a Ana Community College, New Mexico Tech, the <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename>, <st1:placename st=\"on\">Eastern<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Western<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> will have a chance to review academic papers written by presenters and ask questions about their research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
