Martin is leaving on July 31 to take the job of chancellor at <st1:placename st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype>\u2019s main campus in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Baton Rouge<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The regents this week appointed university Executive Vice President and Provost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/%7Eucomm\/Releases\/2008\/july\/regents_interim.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Waded Cruzado<\/a> to be interim president. She\u2019ll take over on Aug. 1 and become the first woman and the second Hispanic to lead NMSU. Cruzado will be paid an annual salary of $300,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIDsh2IKYfI\/AAAAAAAAGNc\/CToVDmphXTU\/s1600-h\/Cruzado,+Waded.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SIDsh2IKYfI\/AAAAAAAAGNc\/CToVDmphXTU\/s200\/Cruzado,+Waded.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224435633959363058\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cI am truly honored by the opportunity to serve as interim president and I intend to pay back the trust that you have deposited in me,\u201d Cruzado told the Regents when they appointed her earlier this week. \u201cI am proud of this institution and its power to positively transform the lives of the people we serve. I will do my absolute best to continue the good projects already in place and to provide leadership on behalf of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> to the very best of my ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cruzado plans to make Education Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/education.nmsu.edu\/departments\/administrative\/dean\/moulton.html\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Moulton<\/a> the interim executive vice president and provost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Martin is leaving on good terms with the regents. They let him out of a provision in his contract that would have required that he pay six months\u2019 salary back to the university because he did not provide six months\u2019 notice of his departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The regents have begun a national search to find a new president and hope to have one in place by January, though Cruzado\u2019s current contract runs until the end of June. When a news president is hired, she will return to the provost job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cruzado was the regents\u2019 second choice for the interim job. Earlier this month, James McDonough <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/mcdonough-wont-take-reins-at-nmsu-after.html\">withdrew his acceptance<\/a> of the interim president job because of an unspecified health concern.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Mexico State University Board of Regents will host a public farewell reception for outgoing President Michael Martin on Wednesday.
