{"id":347,"date":"2006-07-07T10:06:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-07T16:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/starchaser-finally-announces-plans-for-space-facility\/"},"modified":"2006-07-07T10:06:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-07T16:06:00","slug":"starchaser-finally-announces-plans-for-space-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/starchaser-finally-announces-plans-for-space-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Starchaser finally announces plans for space facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After a major shakeup a few months ago, Starchaser Industries, Inc. has finally acquired land in <st1:place st=\"on\">Southern New  Mexico<\/st1:place>, becoming the third space-industry company to announce plans to locate major facilities here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Talks with the City of <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> to secure land at its <st1:placename st=\"on\">West<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Mesa<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Industrial Park<\/st1:placetype> fell apart about the same time the company replaced its North America staff members, all based in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A deal to purchase land near Hatch for an astronaut training facility also never came to fruition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Now the company is announcing that it will build rocket manufacturing and astronaut training facilities and retail, lodging and entertainment areas on a 120-acre site located 16 miles west of the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">International<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Airport<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> on Interstate 10, according to articles in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_4021747\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/474222nm07-07-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Southwest Regional Spaceport at Upham is going to be built. The more companies that commit money and time to help the project succeed, the better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Starchaser\u2019s 10-year, $100 million project will be privately financed and create as many as 300 full-time jobs. Apparently, the company has already purchased 25 acres and secured the rights to purchase the rest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Starchaser plans immediate renovations to existing buildings, and will have corporate offices and some retail stores operational later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The company eventually plans to launch paying customers into suborbital space on bumpy rides for thrill-seekers that will cost more than $150,000 per ticket, a big price drop from Virgin Galactic\u2019s initial cost of $200,000 per ticket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Virgin Galactic\u2019s facility at Upham will be publicly financed, but the state and company say Virgin Galactic will pay that money back over the course of a 20-year lease.
