{"id":3467,"date":"2008-07-17T17:58:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-17T23:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dems-fundraising-tops-that-of-gop-in-federal-races\/"},"modified":"2008-07-17T17:58:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-17T23:58:00","slug":"dems-fundraising-tops-that-of-gop-in-federal-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/dems-fundraising-tops-that-of-gop-in-federal-races\/","title":{"rendered":"Dems&#8217; fundraising tops that of GOP in federal races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats outraised Republicans in every federal race in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> during the last reporting period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the 2nd Congressional District race, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryteagueforcongress08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> raised $377,084, including an $80,000 loan he made to his campaign, from May 15 to June 30, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00440735\/351356\/\" target=\"_blank\">the report he filed<\/a> with the Federal Election Commission. His Republican opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a>, raised 314,485, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00441394\/351058\/\" target=\"_blank\">his FEC report<\/a>. Teague\u2019s advantage came only because of his self-financing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the 1st Congressional District race, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> raised $510,571, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00434563\/351823\/\" target=\"_blank\">his FEC report<\/a>. His Republican opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darrenwhiteforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a>, raised 351,933, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00440099\/350996\/\" target=\"_blank\">his FEC report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the 3rd Congressional District race, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benrlujan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ben R. Luj\u00e1n<\/a> raised 330,516, including a $150,000 loan he made to his campaign, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00443689\/350936\/\" target=\"_blank\">his FEC report<\/a>. His Republican opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daneast4congress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dan East<\/a>, raised 10,355, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00443614\/348779\/\" target=\"_blank\">his FEC report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the fundraising advantage for Democrats doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re all in better financial shape. Teague spent $301,781 during the period, leaving him with $75,303 on hand on July 1. Tinsley spent $335,518 and had $111,530 on hand on July 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich was in much better shape, having spent $362,290 during the reporting period and ending it with $354,165 on hand. But White, who had a much easier time in the primary, spent only $100,665 during the reporting period and ended it with a whopping $634,307 on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Luj\u00e1n spent $405,666 during the reporting period and ended it with $92,446 in the bank. East spent $14,706 and ended the reporting period with $10,776 on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/dccc-spending-25-million-on-tv-ads-in.html\">as I reported last week<\/a>, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee plans to pump a combined $2.5 million in TV advertising into the 1st and 2nd district races in September and October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Races shaping up as expected<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bottom line? It\u2019s what most expected: The 1st and 2nd district races will be hotly contested. East, on the other hand, needs something miraculous to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a news release, Teague said no other Democratic candidate in the history of the 2nd district has ever raised as much money as he has this election cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m honored by the support I\u2019ve received from across the country, and I want to especially thank the men and women of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s 2nd Congressional District who fund my campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cIn Congress, I will fight for the same working families who support my campaign day in and day out, and not for special interests outside of the 2nd District and outside of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich said his fundraising topped White\u2019s in the period despite the fact that White raised $317,000 \u201cin a matter of hours\u201d from a fundraiser with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/president\" target=\"_blank\">President Bush<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn my conversations with residents from Mountainair to Los Lunas to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, one thing has become clear: New Mexicans are starving for real leadership and a new direction,\u201d Heinrich said in a news release. \u201cI am encouraged that so many people are taking an active role in getting our country back on the right track, and I am honored by their support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Luj\u00e1n pointed out that he outraised East 17 to one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy campaign is about the people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and I am thankful for all of their support, whether it\u2019s in contributions, making phone calls, knocking on doors or attending events,\u201d he said in a news release. \u201cI have hard work to do in the next few months, but the support I\u2019ve received will make it easier to visit with the people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and talk with them about how we can put working families first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">White was the only Republican House candidate to release a statement about his fundraising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe general election is less than four months away and I am honored that I continue to receive strong support from so many New Mexicans,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are picking up momentum and the strong grassroots support demonstrates that New Mexicans are ready to shake up <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> with honest, independent leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a> was quick to slam Tinsley in a news release, pointing out that almost 75 percent of his donations during the reporting period came from outside <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. In addition, according to the release, his report \u201cis littered with contributions from chain restaurants who Tinsley represented as (former) president of the National Restaurant Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats have repeatedly hit Tinsley for owning two homes, one in the 2nd District in Capitan and the other in the 3rd District in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. And Tinsley said <a href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_m3190\/is_13_42\/ai_n25126329\" target=\"_blank\">in a March article<\/a> that he plans to ensure the restaurant industry\u2019s values \u201care represented and protected in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNot only does Ed Tinsley live outside of the 2nd Congressional District, but it appears that his campaign contributors do too,\u201d Josh Geise, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said in the release. \u201cWith so many out-of-district contributions from members of the National Restaurant Association, it looks like Ed Tinsley is more interested in representing restaurants in <st1:city st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Massachusetts<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> than the working families in the 2nd Congressional District.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">The U.S. Senate race<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, I\u2019ve already written that Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> raised $2.1 million to Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce\u2019s<\/a> $1.2 million from April 1 to June 30. The Pearce campaign spent just over $1.5 million and had $531,624.17 on-hand on July 1, according to a news release from his campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s far short of what Udall had on hand at the start of the month. Udall finished what his campaign called his most successful fundraising quarter yet with almost $2.9 million in the bank, raising questions about whether Pearce can keep up when he\u2019s trailing in the polls and facing a huge funding deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Should he choose to self-finance his campaign, Pearce, a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> oilman, has tens of millions of dollars in personal wealth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats outraised Republicans in every federal race in New Mexico during the last reporting period.
