Law Enforcement Academy Board<\/a> is holding an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/nmag.gov\/office\/Divisions\/EO\/kingbio.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Gary King\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0handling of discipline cases involving law enforcement officers, KRQE-TV in Albuquerque <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krqe.com\/dpp\/news\/crime\/ags-office-challenged-on-cop-hearings\" target=\"_blank\">is reporting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the news station:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThose on the state board evaluating these officers want to question the Attorney General\u2019s Office in an emergency meeting, scheduled for Tuesday and listed on the agenda as \u2018Ineffective Prosecution by Attorney General&#8217;s Office.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The issue, according to the Albuquerque Journal, is that \u201cAt least 60 police officers statewide who have been disciplined by the departments they work for \u2013 some even fired \u2013 are still licensed to carry badges and guns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz, as quoted by the Journal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy understanding is that some of the (academy\u2019s) hearing officers are concerned that the cases being brought forward against officers aren\u2019t being presented in the most efficient manner. The AG\u2019s Office is not as prepared as the hearing officers think they should be. So we called this meeting to get input from the hearing officers. We want to make sure the citizens of the state of New Mexico don\u2019t have to worry about someone who shouldn\u2019t be a police officer patrolling the streets of their communities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/main\/2011\/12\/09\/news\/ag-critics-spar-over-officer-certification.html\" target=\"_blank\">a second Journal article<\/a>, \u201cChief Deputy AG Al Lama said the AG\u2019s Office has had problems getting the academy\u2019s investigators to provide information to prosecutors for administrative hearings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to say we have no role or involvement in trying to make this better,\u201d The Journal quoted Lama as saying. \u201cThat would be foolish. \u2026 The way to resolve the problem, make positive changes and move forward is to understand that it\u2019s not just the prosecutor or the director, but it\u2019s a process designed to afford the individual officer due process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can watch KRQE\u2019s report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krqe.com\/dpp\/news\/crime\/ags-office-challenged-on-cop-hearings\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and read the Journal articles <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/main\/2011\/12\/08\/news\/disciplined-officers-retain-state-certification.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/main\/2011\/12\/09\/news\/ag-critics-spar-over-officer-certification.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The N.M.
