{"id":3419,"date":"2008-07-02T15:25:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-02T21:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/american-hostages-guv-sought-to-free-are-rescued\/"},"modified":"2008-07-02T15:25:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-02T21:25:00","slug":"american-hostages-guv-sought-to-free-are-rescued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/07\/american-hostages-guv-sought-to-free-are-rescued\/","title":{"rendered":"American hostages guv sought to free are rescued"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SGvy3GzEkMI\/AAAAAAAAGG4\/VpUSZJkiDdI\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SGvy3GzEkMI\/AAAAAAAAGG4\/VpUSZJkiDdI\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218531621770399938\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Three Americans who Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> was working to free were among 15 hostages rescued today by the Colombian government from a leftist rebel group.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The operation by Colombian military spies led to the guerrillas giving up Americans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marc-gonsalves.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell<\/a>, former Colombian presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ingrid_Betancourt\" target=\"_blank\">Ingrid Betancourt<\/a> and 11 others without a single injury, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/07\/02\/AR2008070202133.html?hpid=topnews\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After being asked by the families of the three American defense contractors to intervene, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> travelled to <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Colombia<\/st1:country-region> in March to meet with President <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%81lvaro_Uribe\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c1lvaro Uribe<\/a> and to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Venezuela<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> in April to meet with that country\u2019s president, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugo_Ch%C3%A1vez\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>. Ch\u00e1vez has influence with the rebels who held the hostages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said recently that he saw \u201csome positive movement\u201d and was optimistic about the situation, according to a separate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_9637789\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> article. He said he planned to return to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Colombia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> \u201csoon\u201d for further negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a statement released today, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he was \u201cenormously pleased\u201d at the news of the hostages\u2019 release, and said the Americans\u2019 families, \u201cwho fought for their release and raised awareness among the international community, deserve the most credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI worked hard for the release of these hostages, and I am glad that the rescue operation appears to have been conducted in a safe manner, resulting in a minimal loss of life, if any,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cHopefully this rescue will prove to be an impetus toward a humanitarian accord to release the hundreds of remaining hostages being held by rebels and help reduce tension in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Americans, employees of Northrop Grumman Corp., had been held by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revolutionary_Armed_Forces_of_Colombia\" target=\"_blank\">Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia<\/a> since 2003 when their drug-surveillance plane crashed. They were the longest-held American hostages in the world, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson, a global troubleshooter and former U.N. ambassador, has negotiated the release of American hostages in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">North Korea<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Many believe he is maintaining a high profile after dropping out of the presidential race because he is gunning for a top position in a potential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> administration &#8212; possibly secretary of state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Americans who Gov.
