{"id":3398,"date":"2008-06-24T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-24T22:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/guv-says-he-might-seek-a-third-term-in-2014\/"},"modified":"2008-06-24T16:55:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-24T22:55:00","slug":"guv-says-he-might-seek-a-third-term-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/guv-says-he-might-seek-a-third-term-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Guv says he might seek a third term in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SGF7a44HTlI\/AAAAAAAAGEA\/pra4mmFJR5I\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SGF7a44HTlI\/AAAAAAAAGEA\/pra4mmFJR5I\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215585545346305618\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Term limits prevent Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> from seeking a third term in 2010, but he may run again when he\u2019s eligible four years later.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least that\u2019s what <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wrote today in an e-mail to supporters of his failed presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The e-mail solicited money to \u201ckeep <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> a blue state\u201d and \u201cget as many Democrats elected nationally as possible.\u201d Though <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s presidential campaign still has outstanding debt &#8212; more than $285,000 as of May 31 &#8212; he wrote in the e-mail that raising money to help elect Democrats \u201cis much more important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then he wrote about his own future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI still have a lot of work to do here in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> before I leave office in 2010 due to term limits, including fighting to extend health care to every New Mexican. And I remain actively involved with national politics because we need to change <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region> and every one of us has to contribute something,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wrote in the e-mail. \u201cBut who knows? Maybe I\u2019ll even decide to run for governor again in 2014 &#8212; if something else doesn\u2019t pop up in the meantime!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many pundits have speculated that \u201csomething else\u201d might include vice president or secretary of state. Since ending his presidential campaign in January, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has remained on the national stage with diplomatic and other trips overseas and by campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But running for governor in 2014 is not a prospect for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s future that has been widely discussed. In response to an e-mail that asked, \u201cShould we assume he\u2019s kidding about running for governor again in 2014?\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Gilbert Gallegos replied, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t make any assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Governors can serve two consecutive terms in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, but can\u2019t run in 2010. After sitting out a term, he would be eligible to run again in 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Term limits prevent Gov.
