He was 58. You can read about his death from NBC News by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/25145431\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Russert, the host of the most widely viewed Sunday news program, was a tough questioner, and, as NBC reported, \u201cA \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 grilling was often considered an essential proving ground in the career of any national politician.\u201d Time Magazine named Russert one of the 100 most influential people in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, as a presidential candidate, appeared for <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/richardson-holds-his-own-during-tv.html\">his hour-long grilling<\/a> on Russert\u2019s show in May 2007. Russert asked him tough questions about past controversies and one that was earning the governor national headlines at the time of the interview: the claim by the mother of a soldier who was killed in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region> that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/richardson-in-double-digits-in-iowa-and.html\">lying about her encounter with him<\/a> for political gain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in the statement that Russert\u2019s \u201ccontribution to the journalism profession cannot be overstated. Because of him, Meet the Press is the dominant Sunday talk show and a must-do for politicians.
