{"id":3375,"date":"2008-06-11T13:01:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-11T19:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/county-warns-of-misleading-registration-activities\/"},"modified":"2008-06-11T13:01:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-11T19:01:00","slug":"county-warns-of-misleading-registration-activities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/county-warns-of-misleading-registration-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"County warns of misleading registration activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SFAhTWjvMTI\/AAAAAAAAGBA\/L9xUdo9355w\/s1600-h\/DonaAnaCounty.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SFAhTWjvMTI\/AAAAAAAAGBA\/L9xUdo9355w\/s200\/DonaAnaCounty.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210701385224368434\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The Do\u00f1a Ana County <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Elections<\/a> has received complaints about misleading voter-registration activities and wants to make sure the public knows the truth about registering.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Elections Supervisor Lynn Ellins said in a news release from the county that the \u201cmost disturbing\u201d complaint is from people who say they are being told they must re-register to vote under a new law passed by the state Legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is simply not true,\u201d Ellins said. \u201cAny voter who is registered and in good standing has no obligation to re-register.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">County spokesman Jess Williams said many of the complaints are about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acorn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Association of Community Organizations for Reform<\/a>, more commonly known as ACORN. The group has been actively trying to register voters in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> in recent months. It has also received national attention in recent years for allegations in other states of voter fraud and shoddy work, which you can read about from CBS News by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2006\/10\/02\/ap\/politics\/mainD8KGIHB01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and FOX News by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/elections.foxnews.com\/2008\/05\/02\/voter-fraud-watch-could-acorn-scandal-in-washington-have-been-avoided-with-photo-id\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fran Witt, a Las Crucen who is active in the Republican Party, said in an interview that she was approached by an ACORN worker in the Wal-Mart parking lot in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> days before last week\u2019s primary and told she could still register and vote in the primary. That wasn\u2019t true: The last day to register and be eligible to vote in the primary was May 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Witt said she filed a complaint with the county elections bureau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bonnie Greathouse, lead organizer for ACORN in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, said in an interview that complainants are probably naming ACORN only because it\u2019s the most active voter-registration group in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and its name is familiar. She said the organization has strong checks in place to ensure workers are acting appropriately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are very, very strict in our training,\u201d Greathouse said. \u201c(Employees are) under real strict orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Greathouse said the group checks employees\u2019 activity logs daily and calls some people they have registered to ensure workers are acting appropriately. The group has fired some employees when there was suspicion of misbehaving, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe don\u2019t even allow suspicions, much less the actual act,\u201d Greathouse said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The group has about 220,000 members across the nation, according to CBS News. It claims it has registered more than 1.7 million people to vote since 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ellins said in the news release that, while groups are legally allowed to conduct voter-registration drives, they\u2019re not supervised or trained by the elections bureau and \u201cmay or may not be disseminating accurate information.\u201d He said people who want to register to vote should do it at the county\u2019s government center or at one of the political parties\u2019 headquarters because accurate information is available at those locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also encouraged those who are suspicious about an encounter or who have questions to call his office at (575) 647-7428.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Matthew Henderson, the head of ACORN in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>, directed me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/cs\/articles?article=the_republican_war_on_voting\" target=\"_blank\">this article<\/a> from The American Prospect that he said debunks allegations of voter fraud against his group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Do\u00f1a Ana County Bureau of Elections has received complaints about misleading voter-registration activities and wants to make sure the public knows the truth about registering.
