According to a news release, he was joined at a gathering by family, friends and supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of New Mexico are hurting,\u201d Smith said, according to the news release. \u201cNew Mexicans need a congressman who will be honest and straightforward with them and who will be focused on creating solutions to the problems facing our nation and our great state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCareer politicians like President Barack Obama and Congressman Martin Heinrich got us in this mess,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019ve seen what socialism looks like firsthand as I\u2019ve been stationed around the world, and believe me, America cannot continue down this road of failed policies and failed leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith joins former State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/janice2012.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a> and Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danlewis2012.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Lewis<\/a> in the GOP primary. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jon_Barela\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Barela<\/a>, the Republican Party\u2019s 2010 nominee for the Albuquerque-area 1st Congressional District seat, says he\u2019s also considering running.<\/p>\n<p>On the Democratic side, the candidates are former Albuquerque Mayor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/martychavez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marty Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>, State Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/griegoforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Griego<\/a>, and Bernalillo County Commissioner\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/michellelujangrisham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s news release states that he served honorably in the Army for more than 20 years and has one son and three grandchildren. He lives in Albuquerque\u2019s northeast heights and attends the First United Methodist Church of Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the speech he gave at the weekend gathering states that his top priority will be \u201cto create an environment where our nation and our state\u2019s small businesses can begin to grow and hire new employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor that to take place, the Congress must enact a stable tax policy that is easy to understand and easy to implement,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been taxed enough already. We must cut through the unnecessary red tape and unneeded regulations that are breaking the backs of our nation\u2019s job creators.
