\"\"<\/a>Only days before the conclusion of a bloody GOP primary battle, retiring U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici<\/a> has apparently endorsed Heather Wilson<\/a> in the race to replace him. <\/p>\n

The impact of the endorsement, announced at the last minute and without any fanfare, isn\u2019t immediately clear.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Domenici told KRQE-TV in Albuquerque<\/st1:city> today that he hoped Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> would win tonight\u2019s debate against primary opponent Steve Pearce<\/a>. Domenici Chief of Staff Steve Bell later told the Associated Press<\/a> the comment should be interpreted as an endorsement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was. I think he\u2019s endorsing her,\u201d the news service quoted Bell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as saying.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> announced the endorsement during tonight\u2019s debate with Pearce.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cHis office has confirmed that those comments should be considered an endorsement of my candidacy,\u201d Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cI will say this directly to him: I am deeply honored to have received your endorsement for my candidacy for Senate. I will never let you down.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The news comes after a report on a blog this morning that Domenici said during a private luncheon on Thursday that he should have endorsed Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> early in the race. Asked about that report this afternoon, Domenici spokesman Chris Gallegos said he wasn\u2019t present at the senator\u2019s table and didn\u2019t hear his conversation. He also said Domenici told him \u201che isn\u2019t commenting on a private conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
