\"\"<\/a>A fundraiser hosted by President Bush<\/a> today in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> raised $317,000 that will be split between the state GOP<\/a> and the campaign of 1st Congressional District Republican candidate Darren White<\/a>. <\/p>\n

At the noon event, Bush praised White\u2019s understanding of national security issues and applauded his record as a law-enforcement officer, according to a release from the White campaign. Bush also called White a \u201cproven vote-getter.\u201d White was re-elected as sheriff of Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> in 2006 with 64 percent of the vote. <\/p>\n

U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici<\/a> also spoke at the fundraiser, where he praised White\u2019s independence and integrity. Domenici noted that White resigned from his job in former Gov. Gary Johnson\u2019s administration after the governor came out in favor of drug decriminalization. He also pointed to White\u2019s efforts to lead a team of volunteers to New Orleans<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> after Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cDon\u2019t vote for Darren because he is of either party,\u201d Domenici said, according to the news release. \u201cVote for him because he is a man of character and a man who cares.\u201d<\/p>\n

White said in the release that he appreciates the president\u2019s willingness to attend the fundraiser. He said he expects liberal, special-interest groups to invest heavily in the campaign of his likely Democratic opponent, Martin Heinrich<\/a>, who the news release called the \u201cdarling of the Left.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy campaign is about shaking up Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> with strong, independent leadership and I look forward to earning the support of the voters,\u201d White said in the release.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the New Mexico Independent has the scoop on protests of Bush\u2019s visit, both by state Democrats<\/a> and by White\u2019s primary opponent, Joe Carraro<\/a>. The national and state GOP have both endorsed White in the primary.<\/p>\n

Heinrich attended the Democratic protest, the Independent reported. He pointed out that White was Bush\u2019s Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> campaign chairman in 2004 \u2013 something White also pointed out in his release.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey go way back,\u201d the Independent quoted Heinrich as saying. \u201cIt\u2019s disappointing to see Darren White continue to embrace the president at a time when the administration\u2019s failed policies are hurting New Mexico<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carraro, meanwhile, blasted the Republican National Committee<\/a> and White\u2019s campaign, according to the Independent, for bringing Bush to Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> \u201cto tell us who to vote for in this primary race.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Mexicans don\u2019t need Washington<\/st1:state> bosses to tell us who can best serve the interests of New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and our country,\u201d Carraro said. \u201cWe are still a democracy and the people will decide.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
