{"id":321,"date":"2006-06-27T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-27T20:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/06\/nine-appointed-to-county-election-task-force\/"},"modified":"2006-06-27T14:38:00","modified_gmt":"2006-06-27T20:38:00","slug":"nine-appointed-to-county-election-task-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/06\/nine-appointed-to-county-election-task-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine appointed to county election task force"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four Democrats, four Republicans and an independent with an interesting past have been appointed to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>\u2019s task force to study problems with the primary election.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Commissioners appointed the members during Tuesday\u2019s meeting. The task force becomes official a day after the apparent firing of the county\u2019s elections supervisor, Mari Langford. Chief Deputy Clerk Cecilia Madrid will serve in that capacity for now, and will assist the task force, while also settling the office after its move to the new building and preparing for the November general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The county clerk\u2019s office has been under fire since the primary election earlier this month. Though there were fewer problems than in past elections, there were still issues with polling places and workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The task force is assigned to examine everything from pre-election planning to post-election reporting and recommend changes to the commission. The commission can\u2019t force the changes on Clerk Rita Torres, who is elected, but does control her budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I believe Torres tried to assert her office\u2019s independence at Tuesday\u2019s meeting, but much of what she said wasn\u2019t understood by many in attendance, including me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI can agree very well with everybody,\u201d Torres said, \u201cbut I am the one that\u2019s going to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Judy Baker, an active Democrat and poll worker who is also a revenue agent for the IRS, was one of those appointed to the task force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI know how difficult it is, and what a task they have before them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Ybarra%2C%20Felicia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Ybarra%2C%20Felicia.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The appointees include Felicia Ybarra, who works at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> as the director of presidential events and is a former student regent. She was appointed to the position by Gov. Bill Richardson several years ago after she switched parties from Democrat to independent to be eligible (no more than three members of the board can be from the same party).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Because he didn\u2019t like some of her votes, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> later tried to remove Ybarra from the board, using the signed, undated resignation letter he required Ybarra and all other appointees at the time to sign before being appointed. Ybarra stood up to the governor and, with the aid of many, including Republican Sen. Rod Adair and Attorney General Patricia Madrid, a Democrat, convinced the governor to back off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> later declared the resignation letters illegal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ybarra has remained an independent and should bring an interesting perspective to the task force. I\u2019m glad to have Ybarra and another young person, Republican David Lutz, on this committee.
