Steve Pearce (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., is taking issue with a recent guest column on this site accusing him of cosponsoring legislation that would \u201cresult in the worst sell-off of our nation\u2019s most scenic treasures in living memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/09\/the-great-outdoors-giveaway\/\" target=\"_blank\">The column<\/a>, from New Mexico Wilderness Alliance Associate Director Nathan Newcomer, states that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bill.xpd?bill=h112-1581\" target=\"_blank\">Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act<\/a>, which Pearce is cosponsoring, would be more appropriately called \u201cthe Great Outdoors Giveaway Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not true, says Pearce\u2019s press secretary, Jamie Dickerman. Here\u2019s Dickerman\u2019s full statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cConcerning the recent article on Congressman Pearce, titled \u2018The great outdoors giveaway,\u2019 there are some misleading and incorrect statements made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill that was referenced is H.R. 1581. Under this legislation, there is no \u2018sell-off\u2019 of land. The bill simply opens certain land to multiple uses, while keeping them under federal ownership. The Department of the Interior has studied these lands and has deemed them unsuitable for wilderness designation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, Congressman Pearce is an avid outdoorsman, who enjoys spending time on the land. He is very proud of New Mexico\u2019s public lands, and works diligently to conserve them in the most appropriate manner possible. To suggest otherwise is not only baseless and unfair, but shows clearly that Mr. Newcomer is more interested in personal attacks than a rational discussion. Further, Rep. Pearce has previously voted in favor of wilderness designation in those cases where it was appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, Mr. Newcomer erroneously implies that BLM has not had the chance to weigh in on this legislation. In reality, the lands affected by this legislation have been reviewed by BLM and deemed inappropriate for wilderness designation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
