{"id":31889,"date":"2011-09-15T09:33:16","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T15:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=31889"},"modified":"2011-10-08T21:44:19","modified_gmt":"2011-10-09T03:44:19","slug":"councilor-small-announces-re-election-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/09\/councilor-small-announces-re-election-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Councilor Small announces re-election bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_31890\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31890\" title=\"Small, Nathan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Small-Nathan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathan Small<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/Government\/Legislative\/City%20Council\/District%204.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Small<\/a> has announced that he is seeking re-election to the District 4 seat on the Las Cruces City Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made real progress in Las Cruces over the past four years, especially when it comes to quality of life in our existing neighborhoods,\u201d Small said in a news release. \u201cWe\u2019ve returned accountability and control to the people of Las Cruces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Small said fiscal responsibility has been key to the city\u2019s progress, saying the city is \u201cin excellent financial shape\u201d in spite of \u201cdifficult economic times for our state and nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe maintain twice the required reserves in our general fund, and in the last two years have cut over $7 million from the city budget while keeping services strong,\u201d he said. \u201cWith businesses opening or expanding along Picacho, El Paseo, and on the West Mesa, and street work going on across District 4, I am excited to continue our work of moving Las Cruces forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Small said he was a leader in establishing a sustainability plan for the city \u2013 which he expects will save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs in the coming years \u2013 and said communication with constituents, improved publish safety, and economic development have been his primary concerns.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Small has held dozens of neighborhood meetings during his first term on the council to establish neighborhood watch programs and hear from District 4 residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to me to listen to the people of our district and to partner with them in setting priorities for the city,\u201d he said. \u201cResidents are playing an increasingly important role in making Las Cruces a great place to live \u2013 now and in the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Small married Xochitl Torres of Las Cruces in 2010. He describes himself as \u201can avid outdoorsman.\u201d He\u2019s a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club and Do\u00f1a Ana County Associated Sportsmen.<\/p>\n<p>Two candidates have announced that they\u2019re challenging Small in the Nov. 8 election \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/08\/diaz-enters-cruces-city-council-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Henry Diaz<\/a> and Ryan Matthew Dailey.
