GOP pre-empts attack ad against McCain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moveon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MoveOn.org<\/a> plans to begin airing a controversial television ad in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> on Thursday attacking Republican presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a>, and the state\u2019s GOP is attempting to pre-empt the ad with its own strike.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s the ad, which has already been running in other states and drawing a great deal of attention:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object height=\"351\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/x1V7rJfo1TE\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/x1V7rJfo1TE\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" height=\"351\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad plays audio of McCain saying he doesn\u2019t think Americans would be concerned if the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region> stayed in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> \u201cfor 100 years, or 1,000 years, or 10,000 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c100 years in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>,\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator then says. \u201cAnd you thought no one could be worse than George Bush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The MoveOn.org ad could be interpreted to imply that McCain was referring to combat missions, not peacetime presence. But as the non-partisan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/elections-2008\/dnc_vs_mccain.html\" target=\"_blank\">FactCheck.org<\/a> reports, McCain was speaking specifically about a peacetime presence, not the continuing of combat operations, and that\u2019s made clear when you consider the context of the quote:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Japan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> for 60 years. We\u2019ve been in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Korea<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> for 50 years or so. That would be fine with me, as long as Americans, as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed,\u201d McCain said in the speech in which he gave the 100-years quote. \u201cIt\u2019s fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SBjt_Mkvq9I\/AAAAAAAAFn8\/as0ihggF1Yw\/s1600-h\/Weh,+Allan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SBjt_Mkvq9I\/AAAAAAAAFn8\/as0ihggF1Yw\/s200\/Weh,+Allan.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195163840134753234\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>State Republican Party Chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=392:allen-e-weh-biography&amp;catid=47:state-party-officers-and-staff&amp;Itemid=58\" target=\"_blank\">Allen Weh<\/a> pointed out today during a conference call with reporters that Republican and Democratic presidents alike have made the decision to keep American troops in certain nations around the world long after combat operations ended. He said the MoveOn.org ad is \u201cmisleading\u201d and takes McCain\u2019s quote out of context.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAm I surprised that MoveOn.org is disingenuous? Absolutely not. They are a left-wing, radical organization and they are going to stretch the truth,\u201d Weh said. \u201cHe\u2019s making reference to peacetime presence. \u2026 He clearly did not mean that we\u2019re going to be fighting combat missions for 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad is going to begin airing Thursday in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, the two states that went to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al_gore\" target=\"_blank\">Al Gore<\/a> in 2000 but went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/president\" target=\"_blank\">George Bush<\/a> in 2004. In a news release announcing the <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state> ad buy, MoveOn.org\u2019s executive director, Eli Pariser, said voters \u201cneed to know Senator McCain would continue President Bush\u2019s failed policies \u2013 in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cA vote for him is basically a vote for a third Bush term,\u201d Pariser said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad will run for a week on broadcast and cable stations in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, the news release from MoveOn.org said. The organization will spend $160,000 to air the ad in both states as part of a $1 million campaign it plans in May to air the ad across the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Weh said the party may consider asking <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> television stations to reject the ads. He said the Democratic presidential candidates should denounce them, as McCain has done when conservative groups have run ads attacking them that were unfair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Weh also said he believes voters will see through the MoveOn.org ad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThey can tell a flaky ad from a bona-fide ad,\u201d he said. \u201cThey understand B.S. and this one is a B.S. ad.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MoveOn.org plans to begin airing a controversial television ad in New Mexico on Thursday attacking Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and the state\u2019s GOP is attempting to pre-empt the ad with its own strike.
