{"id":3159,"date":"2008-04-29T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-29T21:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/vigil-to-petition-supreme-court-after-appeal-rejected\/"},"modified":"2008-04-29T15:39:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-29T21:39:00","slug":"vigil-to-petition-supreme-court-after-appeal-rejected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/vigil-to-petition-supreme-court-after-appeal-rejected\/","title":{"rendered":"Vigil to petition Supreme Court after appeal rejected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SBeVvMkvq3I\/AAAAAAAAFnM\/_WUBSQlpgWQ\/s1600-h\/Vigil,+Robert.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SBeVvMkvq3I\/AAAAAAAAFnM\/_WUBSQlpgWQ\/s200\/Vigil,+Robert.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194785333256891250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld former state Treasurer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_vigil\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Vigil\u2019s<\/a> conviction on a felony count of attempted extortion in the scandal the rocked <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and led to prison time for two former treasurers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can read the opinion from the appeals court in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ck10.uscourts.gov\/opinions\/07\/07-2060.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Vigil\u2019s attorney, Sam Bregman, told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_9096348\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.770kkob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">770 KKOB-AM<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> that he will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of fight left, and we will continue to fight this legal issue because we believe we\u2019re right,\u201d the Associated Press quoted Bregman as saying. \u201cWe\u2019re still very firm in our belief that Robert Vigil committed no crime for which he was convicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Vigil was convicted in September 2006 on one count of attempted extortion but acquitted on 23 other felony charges. He started serving a 37-month prison sentence in April 2007.
