{"id":3127,"date":"2008-04-22T15:16:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-22T21:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/wilson-hits-pearce-over-border-patrol-vote\/"},"modified":"2016-04-14T10:05:10","modified_gmt":"2016-04-14T16:05:10","slug":"wilson-hits-pearce-over-border-patrol-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/wilson-hits-pearce-over-border-patrol-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilson hits Pearce over Border Patrol vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SA5WCskvqKI\/AAAAAAAAFho\/lfmyK4dnAxU\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SA5WCskvqKI\/AAAAAAAAFho\/lfmyK4dnAxU\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192182024729766050\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The fighting between the two GOP U.S. Senate candidates is continuing, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heatherforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> attacking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> for saying he supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents even though he voted in 2007 against such funding as a member of the U.S. House.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s an issue on which <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has gone after Pearce in the past, but comments she made in an e-mail to supporters this weekend and that her campaign manager made in a Tuesday news release stepped up the rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCongressman Pearce has given several different explanations for why he voted against funding the Border Patrol,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wrote in the e-mail. \u201cBut like his vote to mothball Cannon Air Force Base and his votes to cripple Department of Energy funding for Sandia and <st1:place st=\"on\">Los Alamos<\/st1:place> national labs, they don\u2019t make much sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SA5WPckvqLI\/AAAAAAAAFhw\/FO0uKrBktAI\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SA5WPckvqLI\/AAAAAAAAFhw\/FO0uKrBktAI\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192182243773098162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Her campaign manager, Chris Collins, echoed those words in the news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe\u2019s talking out of both sides of his mouth,\u201d Collins said. \u201cCongressman Pearce sometimes says he wants more border patrol, but that doesn\u2019t match his voting record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Collins\u2019 comments came after a Pearce response to a questionnaire published Sunday in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/301738nm04-20-08.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> stated that the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United   States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> must \u201cincrease manpower to prevent human trafficking, drug smuggling and cross-border violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said earlier this year <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/wilson-comes-out-firing-in-first-gop.html\">at a debate in Alamogordo<\/a> that he voted against the funding increase referenced by <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> because the agency spends $180,000 to train each agent, and almost $160,000 of that is unaccounted for in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. He said <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> has joined the other members of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s delegation in engaging in wasteful spending, while he has never wavered from his commitment to reducing government waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also said he later voted for another proposal to increase the number of Border Patrol agents by taking money away from the Transportation Security Administration \u2013 an unsuccessful proposal <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> opposed. He said the two have taken \u201ca different approach\u201d on increasing the number of Border Patrol agents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city>, in her e-mail, said she visited the southwestern corner of the state on Thursday \u2013 which is located in the House district Pearce represents \u2013 and was \u201cshocked\u201d to be told in Lordsburg that \u201cnot one of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s federal representatives had actually toured the tough terrain of the border south of their town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She said the increase in the number of agents and the temporary stationing of the National Guard has helped reduce the flow of narcotics and human traffickers in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wilson and Pearce have been sparring in what has become an increasingly contentious primary contest. In addition to the Border Patrol-funding issue, <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> has attacked Pearce over comments he made <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/wilson-attacks-pearce-for-comments.html\">about England<\/a>. Pearce has attacked <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> for <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/pearce-continues-attacking-wilsons.html\">missing votes<\/a> in the House while she was campaigning in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.
